Anyone else not starting solids at 6 months?

DD will be six months at the end of the month. She hasn't the slightest sign of a tooth and can't sit up with out the boppy for support.
With
my other two I tried at 7 months and they were not interested. They had the gag reflex till about 10 months. They didn't want anything till they were a year old and only wanted things they could pick up themselves.

I think I'm just going to wing it with this one since she is developing the same way.
I'm just going to wait until I can hand her something and she can eat it. I don't wantto waste time boiling and pureeing and trying.
Is that really weird?

not weird.. a lot of people do it. a lot of people purposely skip purees and just their kids eat what they can put in their mouths on their own.

My Cecilia showed the readiness signs that I think are important at six months, so we started with avocado last weekend. Those signs, by the way, are sitting independently, able to pick food up with fingers (not palm swipe), loss of infant tongue thrust and interest in food on our plates. She barely eats anything at all, and I am just fine with that. Furthermore, had she not displayed all four signs, chances are I wouldn't have started solids. I think it's a great idea to wait until your baby is really ready.

Also, if you don't want to mess with purees and want to go baby-led, here are some links:

My LO is 6.5 months and we just started her on a little rice this week. She was showing signs of readiness, swallowed well and even fed herself from the spoon. Coincidentally(?), however, she dropped her bottle intake a LOT, so we're going to drop the solids and wait a while longer. In my book, a wait and see approach is always the way to go, and I think you're completely right to trust your instincts.

DS is 7 months and still not on solids. We tried a teething biscuit (homemade) over the weekend and he just kept licking it. With that and the fact that he can't quite sit by himself, we decided to wait. He seems more interested in learning to crawl than learning to sit. We may end up skipping purees and just giving him bigger chunks of food for him to smoosh himself. We're hoping to start with sweet potatoes and squash when he is finally ready.

We loosey tried introducing purees around 7 months, no interest

Around 8 months he started self feeding, then I back peddled to purees, (I have a drip in supply due to pregnancy and wanted to get some food in him)

Personally I like BLW much better than trying to feed because for me I'd get frustrated if I made something and he then showed zero interest then after it was throw away a few days later would eat the same food. At least with BLW I can eat what he doesn't, But I'm weird about wasting food.

nak

DD is 10 months old and only wants apples and pears. She tastes other things but doesn't eat hardly any at all. We didn't start until 8ish months because she showed ZERO interest.

Now I know what blw means.
Never heard of it. I thought that meant just letting your baby stop nursing when they want to instead of when you want to.

That's child-led weaning. Confusing, I know!

It is the same thing, really, as the baby picks up more and more food it will eventually lead to the baby weaning from the breast in the long run. But the forum on MDC called CLW is not about introducing solids really.

Unless you know there's something other than variations in development keeping your LO from sitting well alone (e.g. they have a back issue), I wouldn't offer solids until they can sit up.

But after 6 months and sitting, I don't see any reason to wait to let them play with food. Either they'll be ready and go for it, or they'll still have a tongue thrust reflex and the food won't get into them, or they won't be interested and won't pick up the food, or they'll use the food as a drum/fingerpaint and have a lovely time in the bath.

we started about 9.5 months just little here and there of table foods. its better for them IMO...i guess as long as you dont formula feed though. (my bff FF her baby and started at 4 m/o Dr. said something about not being able to absorb something or another, i have no clue really but throwing it out there)

We do BLW and start at 6 mos. If the kid isn't interested or able, they won't eat until they are. My kids are MORE than ready and eager by 6 mos... it takes a lot of effort to keep them from eating before then (and we had a monumental fail when my second got into a bowl of chili at 5 months!)
