Hi,
I am feeling so frustrated about this rash and pain that I have been experiencing for 6 months or more!
When my son was about 7 or 8 months it started on one side -- a red, dry, cracking, painful nipple. I thought it must be thrush or something. My doctor prescribed a version of Newman's breastfeeding ointment (or whatever it is called) that had four different things in it. I applied the cream for around 10 plus days and it seemed to clear up.
Not long after it came back on both nipples. I applied the cream again for around 10 days or even longer. It cleared up. And then it came back again!
I occasionally applied the cream and it would make it get a bit better, but just kept coming back.
I moved to a different state in the middle of this and switched insurance and doctors, so it took awhile to get to a doctor again.
Anyways, long story short, after seeing several doctors, they tried two different things. I was put on diflucan, which wound up not working, which made them rule out thrush.
Hydrocortisone seemed to be the thing that helped, so she gave me a stronger steroid cream and said that if it didn't completely clear up in 2 weeks, I should go to the Breast Health Center, because she really couldn't figure out what was going on, but that her best bet was that it was some kind of skin irritation.
So, it didn't completely go away and I am so tired of applying and then washing off this medicine!
I have an appointment at the Breast Health Center, but don't think they are going to be able to help -- they are experts in breast cancer, not in breastfeeding. I figure I'll try to find an LC and/or LLL leader, but wanted to post on here in case anyone has any idea what is going on.
(For background, I breastfed my older son for 3 years without this ever happening, including tandeming for around 6 months.)
Any ideas or suggestions would be great!
Thanks in advance!
