Would it be crazy to put a Medela Symphony on my registry?

Because it's so CRAZY EXPENSIVE!!! There's really only ONE couple that I could see *maybe* getting it for me (ex dp's parents, and that's if they don't back out of this baby's life like ex dp is doing, I really have NO clue where they stand). There's also the very small chance that a few friends might be smart enough to band together and chip in to get a used one for me.

I just figure I could link to it from any ole web site (perhaps amazon) and then put 600+ in the price and then under the details section I could just say that if anyone feels like being super generous and wants to find a cheap used one on CL then that would be great.

Would that make me look crazy???

Register for whatever you want, just make sure there's a wide range so people can spend as little or as much as you want. Sometimes people like to get together for a group gift.

That being said, the Medela Pump In Style is a lot cheaper than the Symphony and works just as well. I used the Symphony while DD was in the NICU and when she was being discharged, I started looking into renting a Symphony because I loved it so much. It was still really expensive to rent, though, so I "settled" for a Pump In Style and I couldn't be happier. It is an excellent pump and I honestly don't notice a decline in quality between the Symphony and the Medela, although the Symphony is quieter.

Last time I used an Ameda Purely Yours and had such poor response to the pump that my supply actually went down when I went back to work when DS was 9 or 10 weeks old. To the point that he was being supplemented with formula while I was at work and we were struggling with nursing while at home because he developed nipple preference. I was lucky enough to be able to quit my job and had to fight him for weeks to get nursing back to normal.

While I would love to TRY a PiS, it's just not a risk I can take. Who knows, I *might* respond to it better than the Purely Yours, but there's a very good chance I won't. It's just not a risk I can take. I'm pretty sure I'll have to go back to work after birth (and I don't even know how long I'll have off as I haven't found a job yet and doubt I'll find one that will give me short term disability and even that may not cover my living expenses - it's REALLY up in the air right now). I just can't take the chance that the same thing happens again...if it gets as bad as it did last time, I may be forced to wean because I cannot just quit like last time. It's a risk I just can't take unless it's my only option. To the point that I'll just rent a Symphony if I can't buy one, even though buying a used one at about $600 would be cheaper than the rental for a year+.

One side of DHs family got together for a cousin of his and bought a jogging stroller. A good, very expensive one. They all pitched in and it ended up being cheap per person (DHs dad has several siblings, so it was all of them plus their own kids who are all adults now too)

Ahhhh, gotcha. In that case I can see why you want to spring for the hospital-grade pump. I hope someone really generous reads your registry. If nothing else, when anyone asks you what you want for the new baby, you could tell them you're trying to save up for a high-quality pump and any contributions would be helpful.

Beware that people might decide to all chip in and that's your only gift, but register for whatever you want. It's your registry!

If that's all I got, I would be happy. The only other NECESSITY MUST HAVE is cloth diapers and I have a feeling my parents would pitty me enough to help me get those if it came down to it. Even if I had to do it with only a dozen prefolds and one cover, at least I'd have some. That would suck, though...big time. Haha.

Heck no! If someone or more than one is willing to buy it for you great! How exciting would that be?

I don't really have much advice, but depending on where you register a lot of places give you a discount on items that weren't purchased. Then if you had to buy it yourself then you could at a cheaper price.

Even if they don't buy it for you they might get you a gift card to help you buy it.

i would put it and hope that people band together.

as for renting....have you checked your local WIC office? i know they rent PIS but might do others too. here it's just a $15 deposit and you get it back!

also check with your insurance. i'm on state insurance and they paid in full for my PIS although there was also an option for a request for a hospital grade pump which they also would have paid for.

They'll GIVE me a PiS or Purely Yours, but I need a hospital grade pump. So I called them and the peer counselor irked the hell out of me. I explained my situation, why I would need a hospital grade pump, and she goes, "I just don't see why you would have to wean." Hello? Because if I had not been able to quit last time, my supply would have continued dropping and the nipple preference would have been worse and we almost certainly would have weaned without a hospital grade pump. I can't take even the slightest risk of going down that path again this time because I will NOT have the luxury of quitting, and the thought of giving my baby formula if I don't have to is enough to make me :Puke but it's work or be homeless. I explained that...and she just. didn't. get it. So she just basically told me there's no way they'd do it unless I had a baby in the NICU essentially. She treated me like I was an uneducated idiot, even when I explained that I'm working on my CLE and have been doing consults with nursing moms for four and a half years.

I suppose I could call again and hope to get a different person who might actually bother to listen that PiS/PY do NOT work perfectly for all women. But I can't really count on WIC coming through on it.

not at all.. i've seen nursery furniture on baby registries before! i guess it depends on your audience. with my first, i had a registry with not so expensive stuff on it.. and my coworkers all went in together and threw me a surprise shower at work. they pooled their money together and wound up basically buying most everything off my list! so in that case, something more expensive would've worked out fine! and this was way before my baby shower so i had to go back and do another list!

My sister got a pump in style brand new in 2001 and I used it just recently in 2008. it still works perfectly and I plan on using it again with my next babe. My sis used it twice with her babes. I'd go with the pump in style too!

I felt really funny about putting a $400 breast pump on my registry. My best friend who was throwing the shower insisted I put it on there regardless of the cost. Well, it's a good thing I did! My SIL saw it on the registry and recognized the manufacturer's name as a company her friend works for. She called her friend and her friend was able to get it for $125!! So I received it from my SIL and MIL for a shower gift, and I am SO grateful. Had I not put it on the list, she never would have thought of it, since her kids are grown and she didn't BF. So, YES, put it on your list. You never know what might happen!

Yes - add it to the registry. If you don't get it, the stores give you discount coupons to get the stuff you didn't receive as gifts.

This was my first thought also. If you feel like you may purchase it yourself, put it on there.

If WIC will outright give you a PiS, you might consider taking it and then selling it to finance the purchase of a Symphony.

I personally wouldn't register for a $1200 breast pump (that's the new price) but, hey, it's your registry!!!
$1200 for a breastpump?! I didn't even realize there were breastpumps that expensive! Wow. Maybe instead you could ask for people to help pitch in on renting it?

The prices I'm finding
is $300 for 180 days. That would be $600 for slightly under a year (assuming you need to pump from day 1). You'd have to buy the 'kit' ($36.63 on Amazon) but would still be only about half the cost of getting one new.
