Infected foreskin ... is it my cloth?

Hi everyone - I'm really in need of some help!

We've been using cloth for all DS's life, but he was a very heavy night wetter for a while and so we ended up using Seventh Generation disposables at night. Recently, he's stopped nursing at night, and so we thought we could get through the night in cloth and get rid of 'sposies forever. Now we use a GAD Semi-Fitted with the fleece liner, two JoeyBunz inserts, and a Dancing Bears fleece cover overnight, and everyone wakes up dry.

Since we switched, though, he's had problems with his foreskin. Once it was a little raw, red spot - put Earth Mama Angel Baby on it for a couple of days and it cleared up. A couple days ago, I thought it was looking red again, and it just looked redder and redder. I put Bacitracin on it, and it didn't clear up, and this has turned out to be a bad enough infection in his poor foreskin to merit oral antibiotics (his very first course of them ). Could it be a problem with my nighttime dipes? DH is blaming using the cloth overnight, and I am sort of inclined to agree with him, since we've never had any significant problems before and this is the only variable that has changed.

There are times when DS wakes up that the ammonia smell is so, so, so strong that it seriously is like taking a whiff from a bottle of Windex - it makes me choke and gag. I just found out that DH hasn't been washing the dipes the way I'd like him to - he was using too little soap and doing only one wash with soap, where I do two. When I have access to a top-loader and wash the diapers, they don't smell like this. Could it just be that the dipes were, essentially, dirty, causing the rash and then letting some bacteria in, causing the infection? Has anyone else experienced this?

Any help is welcome - if I can avoid putting a disposable a day into the landfill, I'll be thrilled! Thanks so much!

I am not familiar with those diapers, do they have a wicking layer next to the babe? If not I would try that. Do all your other diapers smell like ammonia as soon as he pees in them? It is normal for a night time diaper to smell like ammonia by morning. But to smell the minute he pees means they are not getting all the soap out of them. Hot rinses are your friend! I rinse on hot till they have NO suds.

Another thought is to put a thick layer of a protectant on before bed to give him some protection.

I would make sure the diaper is a stay dry kind, and that they are super clean and hope that helps. I have never delt with this though. Good luck poor guy.

How was the infection diagnosed, did they do a culture to make 100% sure it was an infection. The reason I ask is that sometimes separation issues can mimic an infection with swelling, pain and discharge.

From reading here at MDC I know that yeast infections and CD can usually be fixed by stripping the diapers.

Yes - they have a fleece layer next to his skin to wick moisture away. We use a thick layer of Earth Mama Angel Baby before bed consistently.

Typically, daytime diapers don't smell. We've started using Rockin' Green with great results. We had some major stink issues in the past, but now it just seems to be the nighttime dipes! I wonder if they need a rinse - we do have a diaper sprayer that we haven't been using much lately, but we could rinse them in the morning and maybe that will get them cleaner. I'll also tell DH to do hot rinses instead of the cold - new routine: hot wash, hot wash, hot rinse. Maybe that will help.

Could his pee just be really strong? I mean, the ammonia smell is really, really, really bad - like, knock your socks off bad.

From reading here at MDC I know that yeast infections and CD can sometimes go hand in hand.
DH took DS to the pediatrician, and didn't say anything about them doing a culture, so I assume there wasn't one. The antibiotics seem to be helping, and it does seem to be primarily sore in an area that had a small raw spot on it. As far as I know, he has NEVER been retracted, so I can cross forcible retraction off the list - but I will keep a close eye, and if the progress doesn't continue, will make sure that they do a culture so we can figure out what the problem is.

Does yeast have the potential to be so localized? It really is JUST in his foreskin, not in any other parts of his penis - the rest of his diaper area looks just fine. I feel so terrible for my poor little boy, I just have no idea how this happened .

Yes yeast can just be in that one small spot or it could be that a sore spot came up then infection moved into it. I hope you get it figured out and he feels better soon.

I had this problem while on vacation 2 weeks ago. It came really suddenly and out of nowhere. I realized I'd recently started giving him orange juice and he tends to be senstitive to things like that (mangos, blueberries.)

I stopped giving him taht, and also started putting a bunch of baby powder in his diapers. I know baby powder can clog Cd's but it was worth having to strip them. It cleared the rash right up!! (that, and no more orange juice! Lol)
