Has anyone else successfully dealt with this?

Our cat Peyton is almost 13 years old and since late summer was having accidents in various places in the house. Took her to the vet and looks like she is in the beginning stages of kidney disease . The vet recommends putting her on (I think, kids were loud while I was on the phone) a prescription k/d diet - low protein was the basic point, to try to extend her life. My brother-in-law is the co-owner of a vet clinic in NYC and is going to try to just send us the food. In the past couple of days she has started to urinate on any clothes, rugs, bathmats, etc. left on the floor. Though I do my best to keep the place tidy, I have a 7 year old and a 3 year old, and I am due with baby #3 next month - so occasionally the housework slides. I feel bad becasue I know she is peeing in these places because she is hurting. I also have 2 other cats who would likely have to go on the diet food as well. I really don't want to just put her down......I also really don't want to deal with the expense of replacing home furnishings because of urine odor (we hope to put the house on the market this spring), such as when we had to replace all the flooring in dd's bedroom because that carpet was her first target before I knew what was going on. I guess I worry that the diet won't work and we'll just be back in the same situation. Any thoughts?
