Average # of words for 17mo? - Page 2

I would say average is probably 15-20. My ds at that age had one, dd at that age had around 50.

Ds1 had 3 words at 21 mos that he used consistently and properly. Before that, he said some words, used properly, but only a time or two each. Oh, he knew some baby signs though, which I've read count as words.

Ds2 is almost 16 mos, and is following the same path- he has said some words (or rather, sounds that resembled the word he meant), but none consistently, and he doesn't use words to communicate. He knows some baby signs, too.

I did make a list, which is saved on my computer, when dd was 21 months (20 adjusted for prematurity). She had about 80 words at that age; some Spanish, some sign language, and mostly English.
Yeah, the first, last, and only time we made such a list was back when he had like 15 words.

And, of course, I lost the list . And don't remember how old he was when we made it.

I hope no one minds me sharing a cute little story about DD.

A couple of weeks ago I was 'yelling' at DH for putting his jacket on the floor again and telling him to put it away. He always does this.

DD turned to DH and asked, "what is mommy talking about?" DH didn't answer right away, so DD infered, "Is mommy telling you you don't have to wear a jacket because it is warm out today? Daddy do you need your jacket 'cause you think it is cold out?"

DH laughed and said, "yeah, that is what we are arguing about: the weather."

So I asked her for fun who she thought was right, mommy or daddy.

She thought for a second or two with squinted eyes. "ummm. I think it is tepid out today."

So diplomatic she is. I swear it was the funniest thing I'd heard in a week.

My son had a fair number of words at that point (I think at 16 months he had around 100 words, but only 40 were spoken, and I stopped counting then). At 17 months he was still using about half sign language, and just starting to put together short sentences.

I've been most amazed by how fast language comes once it gets going. For my son, it was only 7 months between his first word "moon" and fairly long sentences like: "What that baby doing? Baby is bouncing." and "There is big dump truck. Have little dump truck in yurt." and his favorite: "Not want dry diaper! Just stay naked!" It's definitely fun, but there are downsides to the fact that he can express more opinions now.
Yes, it is amazing. I remember I read something about your DS's sentence use at 19 months on another thread. He is on the very advanced end of normal. I was really impressed.

My DD was saying over 50 words at that age, but I remember my ped said she "should" be saying at least 10 words. Pronunciation didn't have to be correct (like Dada for Daddy was fine), but they had to be consistantly pairing the same word with the same object or person (like "og" for dog or "der" for there). Sounds like your LO is doing great, OP!
