Keeping a secret from DH

DS1 got some strange idea to throw DH's cars keys along with a car of his and something else out the window the other day. DH was looking for his keys all morning and afternoon and DS1 never spoke up about what he did. He's been in a real funk lately with talking back and just not being himself when it comes to us correcting him. I'm clueless as to why he didn't speak up and kept this secret from DH and I. Has anyone else's LO done this? Was it a result of something else? I think we're more upset with him with the fact that he didn't speak up about it as to what he actually did.

I guess because he didn't want to get in trouble? He thought you'd be mad that he did it and he didn't want you to be mad. He's too young to realize that you'd be more upset about the not telling than if he had fessed up right away. He might also have thought that if he didn't say anything then the problem would just magically go away. Kids... go figure!

I can imagine that he didn't really think through the consequences of his actions, and then when he realized, he was too embarrassed/too afraid of your being mad to 'fess up.

It probably went something like this:
"Oh hey, I can drop stuff out the window. Cool."

Next day, dad begins to look for keys, and at first your ds probably didn't remember. When he does, dad is getting a little frantic and cranky. Would you confess to someone who's just spent the better part of a morning that you're the cause of their frustration? It'd be hard for me, and I'm an adult!

He's 4, almost 5?

With my kids, it's that they really aren't thinking about it or listening to us to realize that we're looking for that thing they stuck out the window. They might realize it if I ask them "Hey, have you seen my keys?" but still, maybe not.

Good luck!
