Thanks so much for all the advice. I'm going to check out some consignment shops for newborn stuff.

can't comment on the sizes, DD was 9lb 3oz but she would often wear the same thing 2 or 3 days in a row (including sleeping in it) and unless we put a diaper cover on wrong the only mess was spit up and that was mostly caught on receiving blankets, I had to go out to buy more of those twice! we ended up with far more clothes than she wore before she outgrew them.

keep in mind that sizes vary greatly between brands. My son was 6 pounds 3 ounces-- and was 5 something by the time we left the hospital.

In your shoes, I would head to walmart/target and pick up two packs of nb and 0-3 gerber clothes. Those should match up to preemie size from carters or gymoree. They make the long sleeved side snap shirts with the foldovers to cover the hands. My son wore those exclusively for two weeks +, and was able to wear the 0-3 gerber for at least a month or two. Yes they are cheap, but I think it's the right price for how long you will be using them.

our NB gerber things were deffiently way larger than the Preemie stuff in Carter and other brands.. We didn't/don't find the gerbers run all that small.. Saying that though EVERYTHING was huge so we kinda just made do
I did find some preemie sleepers at WAlmart though for jsut a few $ each..

My 7 lb. 10 oz. (down to 6 lb. 13 oz. at his low) two week early baby was in newborn size until at least two months old, and swam in them until he was a month old. His 0-3 mo. coming home outfit I brought to the hospital was ridiculously large. I made the mistake of listening when people told me a) you won't need NB clothes and b) he'll grow out of 0-3 mo. clothes in a month. So I had nothing small enough for him when he came early.

One thing I wish I'd taken advantage of is that many baby clothes stores I've shopped at have a 90-day return policy, so you can buy what you think you'll need in multiple sizes and then return anything you don't end up using. Costco is also a good place to buy sleepers if you have a membership, and they'll always take returns back no matter how long it's been. Just keep the receipts some place safe.

I also think you'll need way more clothing. I was reluctant to buy much, but then I gave birth to an excellent spit-upper, and between that and breastmilk blowout diapers, we sometimes went through 2-3 sleepers in one night, nevermind a day! I did a lot of laundry, even after sending my mom out multiple times to buy clothes for him. On the other hand, all you really need is sleepers (well, that's what I preferred for the first few months until he could hold his head up), so investing in a number of them and a couple of swaddle sleep sacks could easily cover all your bases other than the rare cute outfit.

I think it's interesting that some people don't think the Gerber stuff runs small.

I mean, I totally believe you, I have no reason not to. But my petite 6 month old can still wear some 0-3 month onesies, and can easily wear most of her 3-6 onesies (sleepers are a different story since length matters more). Most 6-9 month stuff is big on her. And I'm not sure I have any 9-12 month stuff that wouldn't look silly on her. But, the 12 month Gerber onesies fit her like most of the 3-6 month stuff fits her.

It's just funny how different babies need different things and how one baby can fit the Gerber onesies early and another they might fit more regularly.

I don't mean they run small, as in small for babies, but they are physically smaller than other brand's clothing that has the same size designation. The same as an Oldnavy size 6 is the same as a gap size 4.

I do wash and dry all nb baby stuff on hot, and found that the gerber stuff shrunk alot. I'm suprised that other people are saying that the gerber nb stuff is on par with the nb stuff from carters-- I just finished putting away all the clothes for baby #2, and was surprised at the size difference. My gerber stuff is the cheapiest of the cheap from wm most likely, though.

You've had lots of advice on sizing and quantities.
Some advice on which outfits. We also had a baby in a chilly apartment, and another with laundry-room issues. I can recommend cotton undershirts (even long-sleeve) with fleece blanket sleepers. The cotton is nice against their skin, and absorbs sweat if they start to get warm. The fleece keeps them nice and warm. Both are easy to handwash in the sink and will dry really quickly if you need to hang them. That way, if you get caught short with the laundry, you can quickly get some clean clothes.
