BLW - vegan

Thread Starter
Okay vegan mamas, I'm about to start my LO on solid foods, and plan on doing BLW. Any suggestions for good protein sources to start with? I know it's just for fun right now, but I want to make sure I give him a wide variety of foods. Also, did your Dr. recommend supplements for your LO? TIA for any advice, recipes, etc.

Cooked lentils? Nice pincer grasp size.

Well, "under one, just for fun" still holds true whether you're vegan, vegetarian, omnivorous, whatever. So for now, and until he's able to eat little things without the fear of choking, I'd stick with fruits and veggies. My Cecilia does best with large pieces of apple or pear (think 1/6 of the fruit) that she can gum on and get little tiny pieces. Or slices of avocado, or soft-cooked squash. Then, later on, when he can self feed himself small things, lentils and beans and quinoa are awesome options.

yes, I agree, absolutely, when baby is older (my lo is 10 months).

My 9 month old loves plain uncooked cold tofu! At first I mashed it so it was like cottage cheese and spoon fed him. Now I give him little cubes to grab and eat. It's so soft it's not a choking hazard. It's like avocado or banana, almost like it's meant for babies!

He also eats mashed beans, veggies, fruits, rice, etc. We did the traditional start with rice cereal then veggies then fruit then proteins. So far so good.

I've heard that tofu is good too! We're vegans, and DS is soy sensitive,so we haven't tried that one... But, he does really lile lentils. If you're making baby food, lentils are great because you can cook them and then mix them with a vegetable (squash, maybe?) and they pretty much disappear. Beans are good too, his favourite kind is kidney beans. He really likes hummus too.

We aren't supplementing at the moment, but we are continuing breastfeeding to make sure he gets lots of fat!

i dunno about the soy. that's the one thing i try NOT to give my babe. i mean, if you have to use soy formula that's one thing but i wouldn't go out of my way to give any substantial amount of soy to a young child (substantial being more than soy sauce for flavor.) without being an expert it is not good hormonally.

Canned chickpeas make good finger food. Drain and rinse. They are full of protein and nice and soft. They mash up easy too.

Coating slippery foods like banana and avocado in cheerio crumbs makes them easier to pick up.

My daughter ate tofu on occasion. We still eat tofu on occasion even though we are not vegan anymore.

honestly, I do not think babies need a lot more protein then your breastmilk already offers. I might stick with veggies, fruits, legumes, and not worry about obtaining a specific amount of "protein."

I tried this today. Thank you for the suggestion! He grabbed the avocado pieces much more easily and ended up eating more of it than usual

Here is a recipe my friend sent me in the mail today!

Avocado Banana Rice Mash
-250 ml cooked white or brown rice
-1/2 avocado, mashed
1/2 banana, mashed
-3 Tbsp unsweetened applesauce

In a bowl, stir together rice, avocado, banana, and applesauce...

Sounds pretty tasty to me!
