SCD diet here I come! Any advice, recipes, support?

I am starting the SCD (specific carbohydrate diet) tonight and I am so very excited about healing my poor poor gut, but I am also feeling a overwhelmed by the foods. The restriction is not so bad - I like meat, veggies and fruit, but it seems like EVERYTHING has to be homemade - even yogurt! I'm not quite sure how I'm going to be able to be cooking all the time. And seriously, that yogurt recipe might as well be an instruction list for diffusing a bomb. Sooooo many things that you have to do exactly right or else the entire thing will fail. I'm also looking for something to use with a breakfast smoothie with peanut or almond butter and the diet says that I can only do almond milk after 6 months of being on the diet - so what can I use now (other than that yogurt)?

I would love to hear from anyone who has any experience with this. I'm curious what to expect, how long I should expect to be on it, what I will feel like, how far down the tubes my social life will go since I can't eat out ever again, etc.

THANKS!!

P.S. I can't stand eggs, so there goes that.

We did SCD with my son over the summer (taking a break in preperation for testing) and it was so not fun. We all did the diet at home, but at least dh and dd got a break from it. I can't remember, but is Hemp milk allowed? If so, that would make a good smoothie. Otherwise, go with water (I know vegans who do this.)

As for yogurt, my BIL is on the diet for Crohn's so his wife just bought a yogurt maker. Seems to make the whole thing a lot easier and if we end up back on the diet, I'm buying one!

Eating out was seriously the biggest struggle and I wasn't even on the diet! You could order a hamburger if you make sure it's 100% beef, no bun, but then I'm not sure what you could eat as a side. Or just go out with friends and have (the ever boring) water! Oh, and my BIL can handle certain wines, so you could enjoy that at some point (he's been on the diet a year or so, I think.)

What sypmtoms are you having? IMO, the SCD is a last resort. Have you had any testing done to determine if you're suffering from a bowel disease/allergic reaction?

Good luck! It's not fun, but you get used to it!

Yeah, that's what I feel like it's gonna be like, not that fun. But on the upside, I will be eating a ton more fruits and veggies and I have a good excuse to have steak a lot!

I know this is the last resort, but really, from everything the book talks about, this is where I'm at, in that vicious cycle of digestive issues that can't be fixed because I can't absorb anything. I have had allergy testing and my tests showed that I had gluten antibodies in my gut, but not my blood. So, I've been GF for a little over a month and at first I felt great and had energy for the first time in years, but now it has sort of reverted back, so I know there's something more than GF going on. All the other allergy tests came back fine - soy, dairy, eggs, corn. The other thing is that I am really underweight and not by choice. I have been trying like mad to gain weight and I just can't. So it is clear to me that this absorption thing is a problem. I wouldn't be shocked if I was diagnosed with Chron's, but at this point, I don't really need the diagnosis to move forward. IF I have Chron's, I'd be doing the SCD diet anyway, so this just seems like a good overall thing to do. I'm hoping I don't have to do it for an extended time but just enough to get my gut healthy again (I have no idea how long that will be, I haven't gotten to that part of the book yet!).

A few questions now that I'm in it: How strict do I have to be with this? I plan on being very strict, but if one night I am out with family and cannot eat my normal stuff, if I have one part of the meal that isn't SCD friendly, will it ruin EVERYTHING? Or, am I still doing myself a favor by even doing any SCD at all? And, did you find that your son's meat consumption skyrocketed? I do like meat, but I don't want to be eating a predominantly meat-based diet. Reminds me, I gotta soak my lentils tonight so I can have something non meat-based tomorrow.

I went shopping tonight and got so depressed as I passed aisles upon aisles of food that I cannot have. I can't even have gluten free stuff anymore. I can't even have hummus for the love of god. But, at this point, I am willing to do whatever it takes to really and truly get a healthy gut, so I can hang for a while (I hope!), but definitely couldn't do this forever.

I'm hoping there's someone out there whose got a really positive, inspirational story about how they did this for like 6 months (or 3 would be even better!) and then felt 100% better and can now eat whatever they want and are healthy. Are you out there?!!

I read the entire SCD book last night and woke up this morning and did a bit more research. Apparently there are different stages of the diet that I had no clue about that the book doesn't really outline. So here I was all excited to have peanut butter and freshly juiced juice and maybe pancakes with nut flour and now I learn I can basically have homemade gelatin and applesauce or a really ripe banana. Awesome. Luckily I had some apples laying around and am currently making the applesauce while I enjoy some nice steamed carrots for breakfast. Can you tell I'm feeling a bit depressed about the whole thing?!

But here's my question: in terms of going slow at the beginning - I feel like compared to most stories I've heard, I have a really mild case of whatever it is that I have. I already eat nut butters, raw nuts and juices and have no problem with them (that I know of). So, do you think it's possible for me to go a little faster at the beginning than most? I have already been taking enzymes and probiotics for over a month, so my body is now used to them and they are helping (haven't had diarrhea for about a month), so I feel like since I'm not having "symptoms" or reactions (although I still feel nauseous, exhausted and can't gain weight), maybe I can jump ahead. Also, where can I find an out line of the different stages and how long they last??

Thanks for any help
