please help! low supply, rejecting breast, allergies, formula

x-posted in breastfeeding challenges...

DD is 3.5 months. She's never loved nursing and over the past month has frequently rejected DW's breast (she gave birth). She's had lots of BM from a bottle as DW had to go back to work. She clearly prefers the bottle. We've tried to minimize the bottle, and until this weekend, the saving grace was that DD would nurse well (and a lot) overnight.

This weekend, she stopped. DW is pumping, we're feeding her milk in a bottle, and offering as often as possible (offering the breast, that is). But, so far, no luck.

We have only 5 bags of frozen milk, as DD has numerous food sensitivities, and the ton of milk that DW pumped early on is allergen-laced. So, we bought Neocate. Last night, I tried giving it to DD straight. She utterly rejected it.

Today I gave her a tiny bit of formula mixed with BM. She took it the first time I did this but not the second.

I'm utterly freaked out, because we WILL use up that frozen supply in the next few days, as DW does not pump as much as DD eats (this has always been the case, but we've been able to catch up on weekends, etc.).

How do I help DD get used to a bit of formula mixed in with the BM. Or what else do we do? Give her the allergen breastmilk? I worry that her upset caused by the allergens will make her even less likely to return to the breast.

I know this stress isn't helping DW's supply either. She has a call into our ped about domperidone, is taking herbs, will start shatavari tonight....but I fear none of this will be enough and we'll end up starving poor DD come the end of the week.

Help, please. I'm in total tears and hysterics.

I would try the food sensitive breastmilk myself. Her tummy will have to adjust to the formula if you get her to take that anyway, so to me it seems like breastmilk with food she is sensitive too wouldn't be much worse, but I don't know all the backstory. She also may be somewhat or totally over her sensitivities by now too depending how long ago this was.

I wish I had suggestions on how to get her to take the formula, just in case, I assume you heated it up per normal? Or try heating it if you don't normally heat breastmilk? You already tried mixing it with breastmilk. Hopefully some wise ladies will post for you!

You WILL NOT starve your baby by the end of the week. Honestly, I'd give the milk you've got if she'll take it. And you and DP are smart to keep offering the breast as much as possible.

Are you comfortable with the idea of donor milk? You could visit MilkShare and see if you can find some donor milk to get you through this pinch. Hopefully your DP will be able to increase her supply some with the herbs and whatnot. Is she pumping during the night. I know it is NOT fun pumping during the night, but hormone levels are higher at night and it's a good time to take advantage of another opportunity to pump.

I also forgot to mention to see an IBCLC who is experienced with pump fit to see if the flanges she's using are appropriate for her breasts. This can make a huge difference. Also, breast compressions. Dr. Newman has some directions on this on his site I think.

KSDoulaMama -- Thanks for this advice! Before today we hadn't thought of donor milk, but we are now.

Thanks for the reassurance re: starving DD. I think we've turned the corner today, gotten some strategies, gotten some things to help increase supply.

The idea of checking the pump is such a great one. I'll be sure DW asks our lactation consultant to have a look.

So appreciating the thoughts and support here...
