would I like crossfit?

I'm looking for a challenging but doable workout that doesn't take me two hours ever other day like my current weightlifting/intervals workout. I've been doing the New Rules of Lifting For Women workouts and I love them, but I'm on stage 5 now and I'm finding that 4 sets of 4 reps of everything plus the extra bodyweight stuff or intervals takes tooooooo long. Not that I don't enjoy the time spent at the gym, I would dearly love to have that time! But I don't. I have a child in half-day kindergarten, a part-time job, a dog who requires exercise every day, a DH to feed & organize for, a house to keep livable, 2 volunteer gigs, and so on.

So... there is a crossfit group that meets just down the road from me. They all look really hard-core though. I have been doing decent weight-training for about 9 months, and I can manage a 5 km run in less than 40 minutes if I really push, but I can't yet do a chin-up (never mind a pull-up) and I see a lot of those sprinkled throughout the WODs. 2 of my friends (both guys) tried crossfit - one stuck with it, the other didn't, but both either came close to or actually puked in the first couple workouts. That does not sound remotely fun, but is it always like that? Or were they just jumping in while hideously out of shape (which was definitely the case for one of them, but not the other - he's into MMA and chubby, but not out of shape, I don't think.)

I just don't want to go and feel like a complete ball of pudgy suck. I am still 20 lbs overweight and short to boot, and not a natural athlete by any stretch of the imagination. Anyone like me who's tried crossfit and liked it, in the end?

Hi! I haven't been here for a while but was posting a bit about CrossFit a while back. It's not for everyone, but I will tell you that I love it! I am not "fit," by the way. I do get fit, but currently, I am in terrible shape. I belong to a CrossFit gym and believe me, I couldn't do a pull up if my life depended on it. We use thick resistance bands to assist with pull ups. I love the intensity and diversity of the workouts. I am never bored. I have also found that CrossFit people tend to be very supportive of all fitness levels - at least in my gym, everyone is pulling for me all the time, no matter how much I have to modify the workout. I went for 6 weeks, had to take 2 months off (long story) and just started back. I have yet to complete a WOD as prescribed. I make modifications to everything and I feel great! And I have never puked

I think you should give it a try. I was completely intimidated at first and had the same impression - that everyone is hard core. Maybe that will be us one day.

I know there are some others that post here - hopefully you will hear from more people. But I say go for it and let us know what you think.

unfortunately different facilities work in different ways. There's another facility near us that prides itself on it's puke buckets. the people who go there post to facebook and brag about how many times they vomited during that workout. we never had anyone puke in our facility. you'd have to ask around or check out the vibe of the group near you. best of luck!
