Doesn't Seem Like Colic....

Alright, I am posting for a friend of mine and his gf. They have a 5 month old son who screams constantly. No matter what they do, he just screams until he passes out. His mother made these two posts:

We've tried gripe water, he's not really a binky man, rocking, patting, playing with him, car rides, everything. Every time we raise concern, we get told it's colic. He throws up all the time, cries all the time. We've tried every formula all the way down the line to Neutramagen for a possible milk protein allergy to little avail. We've been on some sort of reflux medicine for the last 2 months to little avail. We're just both at our complete wits end. We're tired of praying for nap time and wishing him to be older and over it. I want to enjoy my baby but it's soooo hard.

He poos about every other day and here lately it's been really runny but normally it's hard. He vomits a lot. At least 3 sometimes 4 times a bottle (this is an improvment actually) and a good bit each time. You'll hear it splash the floor behind you. Oh and he almost always throws up if he plays on his tummy even for a moment.

Yes, he's formula fed. (I didn't know that until now. I don't even know if they tried bf'ing, but I think it's a bit late to judge them now.)

I've offered to watch their son for them so they can take a break since it seems like they are both reaching their breaking point. That's all I can think to do other than find another doctor and/or demand an allergy test. I also suggested they ask about an upper GI since that's what helped us to discover the problem with my own son when he couldn't keep anything down.

Can any of you think of anything that might help these parents and their baby until they can find a doctor who will take them seriously? It's the excessive vomiting that really has me worried.

well i had the same problem but BF and it was intolerances. DDs dr. said thank heavens you B b/c they dont make a formula she can have....

so i would say do they see a GI specialist? do they babywear? i used to wear DD all day long at that age just to keep her calm.

maybe its just his temperment?

I would get that child chiropractic care immediately and start with castor oil packs on his belly. Poor peanut. Babies don't behave like that for no reason, and colic is not a diagnosis. I'd also try to find a new doctor, personally. It's not okay for him to be that miserable and it's damaging their relationship. Of COURSE she can't enjoy her baby! My heart is breaking for all of them.

My sister when through simliar struggles with her baby and I had some problems that involved reflux but not the crying. Chiropractic adjustments helped ALOT. Would help her poop and not throw up. Then we found the allergies and all was well when I elminated them, because I was breastfeeding...

The constant crying is just so sad, for everyone involved. Maybe you could give her some Resuce Remedy for baby. It can be applied on the skin if need be.

I will pray baby gets better!

Thanks, y'all. I recently found an awesome chiropractor that does prenatal and infant/child work, so those suggestions came at a perfect time. I can actually recommend someone to them!

I've been giving them the suggestions y'all came up with, and I hope they will be considered. I know they are at their wit's end with all of this. Their current pediatrician has been brushing off everything they say, so I (and others) have been giving them recommendations on where to go next.

Again, thank you. Hopefully something can be figured out quickly!

I would agree with the rescue remedy. I was at a birth recently and a child there had allergies, and mom had eaten something that exposed the babe. She was screaming bloody murder and was in misery. I gave her a remedy and rubbed rescue remedy on her belly and she was asleep in seconds. I don't really think it was the homeopathy so much as the rescue. They were given about five minutes apart and she calmed as soon as the rescue touched her belly.

You can even put the rescue in with the castor oil pack to reduce inflammation and normalize digestion. But definitely try to see a chiropractor. And they can consider calc phos cell salt for faulty digestion and colic. That also does a great job in quite a lot of these cases.

Ask if they've tried neocate or elecare - nutramigen is "broken down" (hydrolyzed) milk protein, but it often still bothers babes with severe milk allergy/intolerance. Neocate & elecare only have amino acids, so some babes tolerate that better. They both still have ingredients that some little ones react to, but if milk protein is the problem, they would be far better. They're both expensive, and in some states require a doc prescription (and are often covered by insurance).
