ISO: Good Bedtime book for 5 and 9 yo?

We prefer to do their storytime separately, but it's not always possible. Ds seems to feel cheated if we do a short picture book of Dd's, and Dd obviously isn't ready to hear most of his stories. We tried the Wind in the Willows and she was bored too easily and couldn't sit through more than a couple of pages.

Any ideas?

The Lighthouse Family books by Cynthis Rylant
Thornton Burgess Animal Stories
My Father's Dragon trilogy
Mio, My Son by Astrid Lindgren (or the Pippi books)

My children, 4 boys ages 8, 7, 5, and 4, and two girls ages 2 1/2 and newborn, enjoy the Raggedy Ann and Andy stories. You can easily get them from the library. They are so fun to read. I even love them! The first Raggedy book my husband and I read to them was Raggedy Ann in Cookie Land. It was fun and we could read a chapter a night. If your local library doesn't have it, Amazon.com might HERE: http://www.amazon.com/Raggedy-Ann-Cookie-Land-Classic/dp/0689850964

We love these books too! Also Richard Scarry's Busy town books.
