A bit of background - DS has always been a tough sleeper. We bounced him to sleep probably until 10-11mos, w/ brief periods of being able to nurse to sleep in there. Then we started wearing him to sleep - I'd wrap him on my back, do dishes, and he'd mellow out - either fall asleep that way, or if he started getting antsy, I'd take him down and then be able to nurse him to sleep (if I tried straight nursing to sleep, no go)
our routine is typically - some family reading, shower w/ mom, pj's and teeth brushing w/ dad (while I finish showering) then the wrapping then nursing. It usually only takes 30-45min total.
his sleep at night has slowly improved, but he still wakes up 2x a night most night. Occasionally its 1x (ahhhhh which is nice) but also its sometimes 3. We might try nightweaning soon since we are expecting a new babe in May.
but the bigger issue is bedtime - lately my tummy has been bothering me (morning sickness) so DH has done the wrapping, and then handing off to me for nursing. We co-sleep, and Ill take him upstairs after nursing still on the boob, once his eyes are closed and he seems relaxed. Usually, he'd nurse some more sidelying and then he does tend to pop off himself, roll over, and go to sleep. But the last week or so, 50% of the time, he pops off, rolls over, and will *try* to go to sleep, but will start moving too often - like pushing his head forward (he sleeps on his belly) and starting to roll around, and then eventually its just a loss and he's up. I try to stroke his back, do other things to keep him relaxed, but its like he can't stop moving for long enough to slow down.
so, a) should we switch our routine up? could it be just because *I'm* not wrapping him? I don't get why its not working so well anymore.
and b) how, with us cosleeping, is it possible to get him to try and fall asleep himself? does anyone try this at this age? Will it be too hard to have two babes to 'put' to sleep rather than one that can put himself to sleep? He'll be 2 when the new babe comes, so I'm thinking that might be too early for him to be putting himself to sleep anyway.
We at least need the routine to work more often than it is now! since when it fails there's at least 30min of yelling in there while we attempt things that don't seem to work. I eventually just nurse him again, and then he goes to sleep.
