Barium swallow and radiation concerns

Hi mamas,

I hope this is the best forum for this thread. DS1 is 4 and was diagnosed with GERD and unexplained abdominal distension when he was 6 weeks old. He's now 4, and still has GI issues. He frequently regurgitates after eating and often complains of excessive saliva, which makes him gag a lot. We've been managing by eliminating all foods that could trigger the reflux, as well as making sure he only ate at home. But the list of triggers is constantly growing, and now even safe foods have started bothering him. So we went back to the GI docs, who suspect scarring in his oesophagus. They've scheduled a barium swallow next week, and a scope next month (which would be under sedation). I haven't even started given the scope any thought yet, because I'm concerned about the radiation he will get through the swallow test. He did undergo the procedure when he was 6 weeks old, and again at 12 months. Findings were normal. My main worry is the radiation exposure from a third scan. His drs. seem to think that any benefits (a potential diagnosis and treatment plan) outweigh the risks (radiation exposure). I should also say that I've had a tumour removed from my neck and although I can't be sure, I partly blame all the dental x-rays I had as a kid since they were all on the side where the tumour was found. Any advice or experience with radiation exposure in kids would be welcome. Thanks.

The radiation exposure for a barium swallow is less than a CAT scan. He has not had one in 3 years, and they are not proposing multiple studies, just this one. I would not worry about it.

Due to my daughter's brain injury, we have the need for multiple tests, so we are very contientious about radiation exposure. However, there is really no other way to get the info for the study. Because of DDs need for GI studies, we do get MRIs instead of CT scans when Neuro needs one. We also try to get them to limit how many tests get done.

Well, my kid has had over 10 barium swallow studies and hasn't started glowing in the dark yet. I totally think there ARE risks, but sometimes the benefits are greater. One thing they do to minimize the exposure is to pause the foroscope until they're at a point where they want to see something. Since my kid has had so much exposure to floroscopy and x-ray (10+ swallow studies, probably 12+ GJ tube changes, and so many x-rays I can't even count them) it is an issue that we are all very very aware of, so I pay a lot of attention to time limits and such. Most places have strict time limits for recording time and are careful not to go over. And during one barium swallow study, he will still be getting less radiation than one airplane flight. At least, that's what they told me.
