Losing weight before ttc?

Excuse me while I obsess... Lol. I just got one of my medical charts and didn't realize I've gained 10 pounds in the last 2 years! I dont feel like I gained that much, but those numbers dont lie Dp is encouraging me to try and get in better shape (he is currently on a diet and workout routine) but part of me thinks it would be a waste of time to lose the weight if I plan on ttc in a couple months, ya know? I gained a lot when pg with my son (but a lot was water at the end). I dont want to do that again this time! On the flip side, we are getting married in just over 2 months so I wouldn't mind losing some weight before that. I currently do pilates reformer twice a week. I move to level 2 next week. What can I add to see quick results?

why hi there Steph! lol

I gained a bunch with each kid, and never lost nearly enough of it afterward! DH and I and Ds are all starting a water aerobics class in Nov together. We could all stand to get healthier, and lose a little...plus ds has blood sugar issues and early morning exercise helps a LOT, and that's a class I can totally continue with if/when I get preg too. We already eat really well, and are pretty active, but with my asthma I find myself avoiding anything that isn't low impact - and need to step it up a bit. If you have something like that locally, I totally recommend it. I have done the water classes before, and start looking and feeling better and slimming down after just a couple classes.

I would say, as a general rule, getting into better shape...looking, feeling, and being healthier...these are always good things. Even if you gain the weight right back when preg...you'll be healthier FOR your pregnancy...and maybe you won't be quite as heavy at the end of it, so you won't have as much to melt off postpartum. But, 10lbs isn't a huge deal either...so I certainly wouldn't stress over it. lol I'm a good 30 from being in my healthy range...and almost 60 to an ideal weight, and I really wasn't too worried until I realized how much I'd weigh after another heavy weight gain pregnancy! lol Totally time to slim down a bit, for me!

Good for you - I say go for it! Even if it's only ten pounds, I think it's definitely worth it because starting pregnancy at your ideal weight improves outcomes drastically and cuts your risk of all sorts of complications.

If you want to see rapid results, changing your eating habits gets you way more bang for your buck than exercise alone. I think I've read that excercise is about 10% of the weightloss "equation" versus 90% for food. Scientific sounding, I know. LOL

That sounds fun! Good luck! DP has been asking if we can start karate together (ds already does karate) but he doesn't want to start now... he wants to start next year. I totally don't think he *gets* that I could be pregnant by then. He's totally on board with TTC at the end of december/beginning of January, but I think he is just totally oblivious to the fact that a baby could come from that I would rather do something NOW, instead of waiting until spring when I could be puking my guts out

I will look into the water classes! DS and I have a membership at the YMCA so they might have something there.

I think this is what is bothering me the most. When I got pregnant with ds I weighed 110, soaking wet. When I delivered him I was up to 170. That was 7 years ago. I have no idea what my weight did after that as I totally didn't care and didn't even have a scale. It mostly all fell off though. 3 1/2 years ago I was at 125, which I think is a good weight for me. Any less and I don't think I look healthy. Right now I'm 139. If I get pregnant at 139 and gain as much as I did with my ds I'll be right around 200. I don't even want to think about how long that would take to get off me.

That's interesting. Hmmmm..... something to think about. I need to stop snacking. That's my big downfall, especially at night. DP is totally not helping in that respect either. He's a big nighttime snacker but we decided that starting yesterday we weren't snacking at night. Yesterday was the first day and I caught him sneaking something Then he just came home from work (quite a bit earlier than usual) and he started snacking on animal crackers and dried fruit I have to learn to ignore it so I don't join him!

Yes, this!! I read a very similar statement regarding food and weight loss (well, weight in general) and it totally changed my views on what I eat. I changed my way of eating and lost 25 lbs over a 3 month period. Over a few weeks I cut out processed foods, fried foods, “white” foods (white flour, white sugar, white rice, etc.) and really focused on increasing my vegetable intake (which was pretty nonexistent.) I figured that if we’re suppose to have 5-7 servings of fruits and veggies a day and only 2-3 servings of meat, then I should make the biggest portion of my meals veggies. And in doing so I realized veggies can actually be very tasting!

Only good things can come from getting more physically fit and reducing your weight (when done in a healthy way.) I’m planning on TTC starting next June, but I am so happy I’ve lost this extra weight. Even if I gain another 40 lbs this next pregnancy (like I did with my 3rd) I know I’m starting from a healthier place.
