Do you have background noise during the day?

For example, TV or radio?

We have the TV turned off between 9am and 5pm (unless DD has a sleep, and let DS watch some TV so that I can have lunch and read/knit/chill for a bit).

But I'd like to listen to more radio or music during the day. When I remember, I'll play music through the iPod docking bay. It doesn't have very good radio reception though, so I'm considering buying a separate (maybe digital) radio.
I sometimes find myself desperate to hear something that's not toddler talk, screaming, crying, bickering or deafening silence

What do you listen to during the day?

Aahhh ... must be like our ABC (Australian Broadcasting Commission) radio. I'll have to give it a try

Do you listen online? Where abouts in your home do you put your computer/radio/sound system to listen to it? (sorry to be nosy, but I'd really love to listen to a lot more radio, I just can't quite figure out how to do it!).

I listen to music most days - though not all day long; usually in the afternoons. I'm home alone every morning b/c my older kids are at school all day, and my youngest is in pre-school. I actually prefer the complete silence at that point.

The only time I turn the TV on is from 1-2 when I watch my soap.

I've never been one who likes TV on for background noise - in fact, it drives me crazy if it's on and no one is actively watching it.

ETA: I use our central stereo system. There are speakers in every area of the house (and 3 outside).

I dream of that. Also, of listening to baseball games in the afternoon. That would be nice. We just don't have a radio. I would like to invest in siriuis/xm one day. Do they get NPR. That would kind of be a deal breaker if they didn't.

We do not have background noise anymore. I used the TV for about the first 6 months of DD's life when I thought I could never function in complete quiet. Now it is no big deal. We do listen to the ipod some. Of course, now DD's constant talking fills the house. She is my background noise.

Sometimes I turn on Pandora, but very soon the background noise drives me crazy! I need to be able to hear myself think. I don't do well with too much stimulation. :P

I listen to the radio in the car. I used to listen to CDs but then our CD player broke... All that's on around here though is country music which also kind of drives me crazy. Sigh...

The only radio that Ive been able to find that actually picks up NPR where I live is a weather radio from walgreens.

Peppermint, Id love to stream it online, but my internet is too slow. Plus, Id have to add computer speakers. It is like your ABC. Does ABC air BBC Newshour or The World or any BBC programs?

I do stream This American Life if I miss it playing on air, I just cant miss that. I am in ♥ with Ira Glass and my DH knows it . He is my (someone tell me what the term for this is...famous person we've agreed that the other can sleep with). His is Jeneen Wiche on the Homegrown podcast.

No TV here but I do have the radio on sometimes. I do a few things. We have a radio with an iPod dock on J's changing table as she likes to listen to music, nursery rhymes etc. Sometimes we hang out in there so she can be nekkid and I can fold washing and we listen to the radio.

We also have a radio on the living room and I sometimes listen online.

I listen to ABC local radio, Radio National and SEA FM which is our local commercial station for the 30+ age group.

ETA - I do try to limit it though as I find I don't interact with J as much when it's on. I also think it's good for her (and probably me too) to not have background noise most of the time.

Sometimes. I would say I have the TV on in the background for maybe 2-3ish hours a day, but I don't SIT DOWN to *watch* and focus on anything, kwim? I'll have it on Ellen or watch the news or whatever but nothing that I'm giving my undivided attention to, no. I hate sitting in silence 24/7 so that's a big reason I turn on the tv for a bit here and there.

We either have silence or Pandora - I found a 'channel' that plays kid's music I love! I know all the words to pretty much everything they play and I am thinking of getting the songs on iTunes.

Once in awhile I do the regular radio. I do not use tv for background noise, I use it so DS has something to stare at while I put DD down for a nap

I cant stand any background noise. It makes me agitated and act yucky.

I listen to audio books.

We listen to a different Sirius channel almost every day. It's fun! BUT, after all these years with so many kids (and neighbor kids), I like SILENCE the most.

I listen to the Sirius radio sometimes, but recently one of my daycare kids brought this mega cd of old time southern gospel music (by mistake I'm thinking because I don't think they go to church or are religious - maybe they are though and they're trying to tell me something? I dunno)
Anyway, the kids are really grooving to it, and they seem calmer. It's starting to make me a little mental though, especially when one 2 y/o smacks another 2 y/o and screams 'amen'!

While I'd prefer to listen to informative, intelligent talk radio, spoken in a low even tone I have come to the conclusion that it's merely a pipe dream on my part. It will never happen as long as I have 5 two and three year olds ruling my daytime life.

Heck, no. My kids make more than enough noise, without me adding to the mix.

My ex had the tv on all the time, as background noise. It drove me nuts. I need peace and quiet sometimes.

I listen to the CBC radio (public Canadian radio) on a real radio. I listen to NPR on the computer. I have podcasts (This American Life is great) that I listen to on the docked iPod. And lately, I've been getting audiobooks from the library and loading them onto the iPod. And music too, of course. Maybe it's kind of pathetic, but being by myself with a baby all day long, it's kind of like having company. I don't listen all day, every day, but reasonably often.

in the morning i love having kid shows on. its not for my ds to watch, its mainly to get me into "kid" mode. an hour and a half or so of PBS and im ready for the day! lol

then there is no background noise until my dh comes home, and by that time im trying to turn everything off to get some peace and quiet

I often play music throughout the day, either our local radio station streaming online or music from our iTunes library. We have a computer in the main living area. DS seems to enjoy it as well, as I often see him bopping along. I don't have the attention span lately for NPR or podcasts, but I should give it a try... I miss This American Life something fierce.
