open sippy straw any really.. My baby is about 7.5 months old she atone point took a bottle but stopped at 10 weeks old.. She can take a sippy cup fine and if we have the right thing an open cup.. However she will ahve no part of trying it herself, she wont even attempt to hold one she just wants me to feed it to her.. Shes doesn't get one often and its water and I get I'll need to help but is there a way to encourage her to help or am I just setting my expecations too high?

I had one kid who was totally cool with cups at that age and one who just wasn't interest. Ds really wasn't into cups until later Interestingly enough he was the one into solids though... I'd wait a month or two before getting worried or pushing it- just have one available with water.

DD has been using a Nubysippy cup since she was 5mo3wks. She loves it. We use the one that is squatty with the handles that are super easy for her to hold. Sometimes, she just chews on them, but thats okay too. However, she wont take it sitting up, she has to be lying on her back to drink from it.

We're working on the cup over here, too. DD does try to feed herself with it. We have a Tommee Tippee 6 month cup. This one is great for her to hold, but she can't figure out how to get liquid out just yet. We just got a Tilty, though, and it's pretty great. It's easy for her to get milk out, and I think her success encourages her. You should give this one a try if you haven't yet. They're inexpensive, and she'll definitely use it at some point. Just wish it had two handles like the tommee tippee.

we did open cup and i'm sure at that age i was still holding it for her. it does click at some point. for sure by 11 months she was holding it by herself if not sooner.
have you tried a smaller cup that she can really get both hands around? we actually used a shot glass (it works!!!) or a smaller hard plastic disposible cup. all the sippies and cups that we tried were so huge she couldn't manage them.

I have a nuby and a gerber nuke sippy and a TT one and the sizes do seem quite big.. I am on the lookout for a spill proof something that is much smaller.. She'll try to get the liquid out if I just stick it infront of her but then as son as I come in to help when she clearly needs it she just drops her hands and lets me do everything..

Shes can'tdo open cups without help even shot glass size she chokes and gags from the flow.. I'd love to find a sippy type in something tiny.

Well, mine is 8 months and I help him with his sippy cup. It never occurred to me that he needed to be doing it himself. He gets a few sips with his meals. I usually have to help him hold it because he doesn't hold it at the right angle. ...and he only get it in his high chair with his bib on because he takes a big swig and then spits most of it out. (we have the short nuby w/handles)

yeah....i had to help her with the open cups until 10 or 11 months but honestly i had to help her with sippys too. i think maybe babes that are used to bottle feeding all the time "get it" quicker as far as holding the sippy (if they are used to holding the bottle.)

the best sippys i've seen so far honestly are at the dollar store. i'm not a bpa nut so this may not be for everybody but they are smaller, lighter and just more "old school." like, they have a small spout but not the valve that makes the babe have to suck at it.

Both my boys love(d) their sippy cups. DS1 took to the cup around 5 months. DS2, around 4 1/2 months. We don't use bottles often as I am on mat leave.

This cup was the one that really got them going on the sippy. They both love(d) how small the cup was and that they could easily pick it up / it's very light so they can hold it. Honestly, I think DS2 loves the cup more than me sometimes!

I think this site is from Australia (I'm in Canada) but I couldn't find another link for the cup. I got mine at a grocery store, not anywhere special.

DD needed help with her sippy until about 10 mths.

She started using a glass at 15 mths but still uses a sippy for water (glass at table)

Sippies and straws of any kind encourage DS to bite while nursing. We've ended up settling on the OXO Tot cups, which transition from sippy cups with handles to cups with handles and a slow flow insert instead of a lid to regular cups without handles, and just use the inserts. The handles are really well designed, and DS is CRAZY about these cups. DS *can* drink from them properly, but really quite enjoys spilling them into his bowl or lap, so he gets one practice session a day at dinnertime, right before he gets a bath or changes into PJs anyway. I'm really looking forward for the spilling to stop, since he hasn't taken a bottle since he was about 2 months old.

DS was the same way at that age. Now at 11 months he's just started holding the sippy on his own and drinking efficiently (though he still spits it down his front about forty percent of the time). I didn't do anything to encourage it, other than offering the cup at meals. We've also only put water in the cup, no BM or juice.

I use the same cups, but only with the sippy top. (might try the slow-flow top when she's older). DD LOVES the handles! And ever since I started filling the cup all the way to the top, she has been happy- It seems weird because it makes the cup heavier, but it also makes it so that she only needs to tip it a little bit in order to get the water into her mouth.

Found a solution!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...m/100_3273.jpg

I bought a package of take N toss 4.5 oz bowls and some 7oz sippy cups.. The sippy were still too big and heavy but then I discovered the lids are the exact size of the lids for the bowls soo I just stuck a lip on one of the 4.5 ounce bowls and SUCCESS!!! the bowl is fat enough she can hold farly easily and light enough it doesn't weigh her down... Shes still needs some help but shes can grasp it and after a little practice will even hold it by herself!

We started giving DD a shot glass of water when she was around 8 months or so-to drink with us holding it. She now has a bigger cup which I still have to hold for her to drink out of, but I give it to her with a bit of water in the bottom to practice...She has a few sippy cups, but hasn't really gotten the hang of them yet, she doesn't realize she needs to tip the cup up in order for the liquid to come out..She is 13 months now. .I think since she has never had a bottle, it may take her a bit longer to get the idea with the sippy cup, she is getting better with it, but at first she really just chewed on it.

Has anyone suggested using a straw and slowing dripping water into her mouth? Just a regular adult straw, put your finger over the end to create a vacuum for water, carefully release it bit by bit. They go from sort of hamster-lapping to sucking on the straw to being able to use straws on their own.
