Spasms

Sooo, I think it is his way of working out extra energy or stimulation BUT sometimes it's concerning...
DS will literally jerk and thrash his whole body, pupils dilated, fast breathing but no crying. Appears to me to be spastic. It's like he has no control over it. Usually this happens in the evening when he is tired but awake.
Anybody else experience this? What is going on and is it normal? My most serious fear is that it's some sort of seizure.

welcome to MDC and congrats on your babe!

It may be nothing, but if it is worrying you then please do ask your family dr. You said it happens mostly in the evening or when your little one is tired... I don't know if you have a cell phone that can take video, or a camera that can capture video, but if you do then perhaps tape a little of what is going on to show to the dr. That way they can take a good look and either reassure you that everything is fine or help you and your ds get a diagnosis. Either way, the peace of mind would be worth the trip to the dr for me.

That said... little babes don't have a lot of muscle control. Some jumping/tensing is just plain old normal with a new babe, especially when they're falling asleep! My dd2 would make all sorts of faces (totally involuntary) when she was that small, mostly as she fell asleep or was already asleep.

The pupils dilating thing is what would concern me the most. I would get the pediatrician asap ~and yeah if you can capture it on video all the better.

That said, my DS (5 months) has weird energy burst thingys, I guess they could be called spasms....but he has them throughout the day. He also grunts as he sort of just lets out this energy and stiffens his belly and/or limbs. To me this feels like it's just simply energy being released (he's a real firecracer of energy anyway! ). Sometimes when he's overtired he gets really hyper and his limbs will be kind of jerky, but it sounds like what you're describing is different.

Thanks ladies. I called the doc and he doesn't seem too concerned, says it's normal. We have an appt next week so if it happens again, I will try to record and bring.
