This is mainly just an update for DDC and loss people I 'know' to say how we're doing with the no cry sleep solution and sleeping in general. Too much info for a facebook status update and I didn't want to just put it in the loss section in case the 'normal' people wanted to know how we're doing.
I have not bought the NCSS, I've read this article, plus most forum posts from around the globe about people using the ncss. Considering it was the same price as a That's not my... book I thought I'd see how the article info went and then buy it if I felt it would be useful. As it goes I don't think I will buy the book, we seem to be managing fine.
My first attempt was a disaster, seriously I don't know what possessed me to try while he was teething, I'd recently tried to reintroduce dairy, he was getting used to being back in the heat of Spain, oh yeah and that 'fun' 9 month sleep regression. All I managed to do was make bedtime a fight, get frustrated and have a lot of Pantley Rage (I think this is a proper medical condition for people introducing the NCSS at the wrong time).
I cannot rock Leo to sleep. I feed him lying down so unlatching and then rocking would mean picking him up, or feeding in my arms. As he increasingly decided to unlatch himself and roll over feeding in my arms was not anoption. Picking up and rocking virtually always woke him up.
Putting my finger on his chin really pisses him off, it seems to make him aware of what I'm doing and he roots for boob. So anyway as Leo had been unlatching and turning over that's what I decided to do. I tried unlatching while he was sleepy and drifting off but not asleep. I've read the definition of asleep is when you can pick up a limb and it falls withot resistance. BTW don't try this, it can make a slightly sleepy baby wake up wondering WTF you're doing!
I've been doing the unlatch and roll and I would say virtually every night I do this, he doesn't fall completely asleep on the boob (unless it's taking a while and I start reading and don't unlatch in time). Naps and during the night I can do this too. It is successful and unstressful. OK so not a big step, he's not magically sleeping through the night after 3 nights sleep 'training'. But we're making steps and neither of us are getting annoyed. I really can see a difference. The other night the cat came in, I was shooing her off the bed, this woke Leo up a bit but with eyes open he managed to drift off to sleep again without boob.
Recently I also think the night waking has improved. It used to be only twice a night but with all the stages we went through recently it was more often. I think we're back to only a couple of times. Hopefully with him actually really learning to self settle and drift off this should improve.
I am calling our current situation a success, we're slowly getting there and he's gradually learning the skill of putting himself to sleep. But we're not creating a battle ground or getting stressed. He's just coming up to 10 months and with him unlatching and rolling himself he really did show that he was ready for this step. No idea at what point we'll be able to put him to bed and he'll fall asleep on his own, but at least I can see that we will get there and he won't still be on the boob at 18 (but I might still wind my family up telling them he will be).
