Graco stroller recall

Is it just me or is this a little ridiculous?

http://www.webmd.com/parenting/baby/...troller-recall

I actually have this stroller and if we use it we always use the straps, is that too hard to do? Especially with a kid that's under 1? I can understand not using it for an older kid, but an infant?

It just seems unfair to companies that make products to have to protect against negligence on the part of parents. This really just annoys me, but I guess the company does have to follow protocol. So, if the opening was bigger, would they have to recall for head injuries because the baby fell on the ground? Or was run over by the stroller? There is even a warning right next to the strap about strapping babies in.

What do you think?

I agree; I think it's ridiculous. The deaths are tragic, as are all deaths of children, but these were due to user error and not manufacturer defects.

How distracted do you have to be to not notice your baby being strangled by the tray on a stroller?

All deaths aside. I think a lot of the recalls these days are out of negligence on the parents part and sadly companies suffer. I mean common sense would say strap in your child.

Companies are not the only ones who suffer. Recalls ultimately translate into higher prices for the consumer. One reason for the high cost of baby stuff is a built-in liability cost for the manufacturer/seller.

I detest the way people try to put the blame on others for something that is either ultimately their own fault, or just an unfortunate happenstance that could not have been prevented.

I completely agree with this.

I also have a friend who posted about this on FB and is throwing her stroller away. She 'doesn't trust' repair kits. Really, she's just looking for an excuse to get a new one anyway. *sigh*

I think mine was distributed after that, but even if not, I don't have any problem with it. I usually don't use the shoulder straps anymore, but always use the waist and crotch straps, and I know I don't stop paying attention to my kid long enough for her to slip out of her straps and be strangled. I agree that a lot of recalls for baby/kids stuff lately seem to be coming from parent negligence. used to be products just had to by safe, now they have to be idiot-proof.

This reminds me of a book I picked up where the author was giving examples of very dangerous deadly negligent products and one example was a mother putting her 1 year old child into some sort of bath toy and walking out and leaving her totally unsupervised for an hour!!! Yes, she was drowned when mom returned. So it is the manufacturer's fault, somehow.

I thought it was silly too, unless you are leaving your child unattended, how could you not notice they got stuck under the tray like that?

It's like the Bumbo seat recalls, because parents were putting them on high surfaces.

I think it's silly too, even though something similar to what caused the death has happened to us. When DS1 was just under a year, we went to a church service and I used the stroller. He was sleeping. During the service, I would peek over occasionally to see if he was still sleeping. Well, in between one of those peeks, he woke up, unbuckled himself, and was trying to slide out the bottom of the stroller!! His head was stuck, but he was fine. I was keeping an eye on him, and he was buckled...kids are tricky. However I don't think that warrants a recall.

I truly think common sense is regressing in people looking at a larger picture.

I have the stroller with the hinge that took off kids fingers and I've found it tricky myself and nearly pinched a finger before. I got the repair kit and it seems fine now. But this seems over the top to me. I mean these baby devices have buckles for a reason just like carseats. I am sad that this happened, I just think that parents are getting unrealistic expectations when using safe baby gear. It is only safe when used properly and with adult supervision.
