GAPS while BFing?!?

My family of three and I eat a local organic diet, trying as hard as we can to stay within the guidelines of the Weston A. Price Foundation. Recently, my DP decided to go on the GAPS diet due to some chronic issues (constipation since age 2 w/ weaning from the breast, eczema/dandruff, indigestion/bad breath, as well as seasonal allergies that have gotten worse with age). I do not think my health history is near as complicated as his, but due to the fact that I have recurring post nasal drip, and my son (though extremely healthy) may have inherited some of these issues from his father, I am wondering if I should try it to? Does anyone have experience doing this while breastfeeding? Or doing this diet with a LO (my son is 15 mo.)? Also, I am curious about the therapeutic strength probiotic Dr. Campbell-McBride recommends... can healthy individuals take it just to supplement or is it moot if you're not on the diet? Any thoughts GREATLY appreciated!

I started the diet when my daughter was 13 mos for my health (digestive) problems and it went great (I did it for 9 months). I have always had a strong milk supply so that was not an issue. I did not put my family on the diet but they ended up eating a lot of the same stuff as me.

probiotic= if the person is already healthy then I would probably just eat fermented food as it is much cheaper. I could not tolerate it even in tiny portions as it gave me way too much die off, which happens to some people.

Join the GAPS yahoo group...they are so helpful and you can get lots more info there.

I'd think about it carefully before doing it. I think the diet is very healing, but I won't be doing it again until I'm done nursing. I started detoxing, even though I didn't have many gut symptoms before doing the diet. I was able to slow down the detox enough to feel comfortable continuing, but it continued to be hard to get enough to eat while nursing, and I began to lose too much weight, which also detoxes into the milk. I found that it took all of my focus to get enough to eat. I was able to do that, and continued. But then my baby was hospitalized, and continued to be ill for months, and I simply could not keep up with the diet in the midst of all that. So I stopped, and added grains back in very slowly. I now have very bad gut symptoms, which I never had before. That can sometimes happen when you stop the diet before you've fully healed.

I think the diet is very healing and wonderful, so I'm not recommending against it -- I'm just saying be prepared. For both detox and having support.

You might want to look into Primal Blueprint. Very similar diet, more food options, less theraputic and more general health focused. Would be easy to do while your dh is on gaps.
