tummy bug - when should I worry

My little one is almost 2. She is still nursing to sleep at night and nap. Since 2:30 this morning, she has thrown up 8 times. I called the Dr and they said the normal, clear liquids, pedalyte and gatorade. (DH talked to them, I had left the message). At what point should I worry? She threw up while we were nursing. No fever, great mood, but can't keep anything down.

only if she's showing signs of dehydration....listless, not herself, sleepy...

but even then, i took dd in with a stomach bug after a few days when she started acting really limp and dehydrated, their recommendation was still just pedialyte. as long as they're making saliva and tears it doesn't need to go to the next level (IV fluids).

pedialyte worked like a miracle. i hadn't really rushed to get any since she was nursing and i figured that was better than anything i could buy but really the pedialyte made all the difference.

nak. my 16 mo went through the same this morning. she can keep down breastmilk now and has been really happy most of the day (also no fever).

The concern is dehydration-- so you watch for signs of that, and push fluids. Even if they don't keep the fluids down very long, offer tiny amounts frequently. More is absorbed than we realize, even if they vomit only a few minutes later.

Thanks everyone! She's been keeping everything down since 7 last night. We've been nursing a lot more, but after the last throw up, she stopped asking. We were doing water and juice, and this morning she's been starving. She's working on the 2nd banana. She's sleepy, but tummy seems good. Her buddy at church has the same thing and is hitting round 2 so I'm praying we're good.

Good to read!

Keep her diet really bland with a lot of clear liquids...think bananas, rice, applesauce and yogurt. The yogurt will be especially helpful in reestablishing healthy levels of bacteria in the gut.

I always forget about the yogurt, but we do the brat diet when someone's sick. She's eaten 2 1/2 bananas, and some animal crackers. I ate some soup, but she didn't seem quite up to it. I'm hoping she will sleep well for her nap.
