water engineering toy?

My three year old is really into building water fountain type things in the sink with cups and kitchen utensils. I'm having trouble finding a kind of toy like this to challenge him, and I don't want him running water from the tap all the time. And he hogs the sink when I'm trying to wash dishes and gets really upset when I disturb his projects. I did a google search and all I come up with are pool toys and bath toys. Are there any toys that are like those marble tracks you have to build, but use water instead of marbles? He is extremely advanced with his engineering skills and would probably like something designed for about age 7 to 10.

Also cool, but my son is REALLY, REALLY into water. He likes to make waterfalls that splash into a pool so he can watch the air bubbles that are formed underwater from the splash.

Sort of like marble runs, only using water. I'm not sure it's advanced enough, but you might be able to contain him to the tub at least!

My search also brought up this 'sink'. It's apparently battery powered. So, is it worse to use batteries or waste water??

How about different lengths and thicknesses of vinyl tubing (available at Home Depot or Lowes) and different sizes of funnels. Those kept my former Pre-K/Kindergarten classes engaged for HOURS.

Ds used to use his marble run in the tub... So I got him that Reeve and Jones water works toy even though it looked a bit young for him at the time because it was the only thing I could find that was like a buildable water run. It doesn't work great. One main problem is it attaches with suction cups. You need to have a smooth tub surround, not tiles, because it won't suction on the cracks between the tiles. Or you need to only fill the tub a few inches so you can stick it to the tub itself.
