I feel a little lame having to post this, but I really need help with my cover letter! I've never had to write one before, but am applying for a 'real' job and am thinking it is a must. I have the basic template but I really want mine to stand out! Any tips?

Hey Mama, I am a proofreader and editor. I've helped with a couple cover letters in the past. Here are some of my tips
- You can find some simple cover letter templates by searching for that in Google.
- Also, a general tip is don't make the cover letter too long, and don't make any grammar mistakes! This is the company's first impression of you.
- Don't summarize your resume - use the cover letter to tell things about yourself that are not on the resume. You can mention a few of the biggest things, but that's it.
-Sentences should highlight your strong points and sound enthusiastic....for example..."My attention to detail, coupled with my experience editing many different types of literature, have prepared me well for this position."
-But, try to remain humble. You never want to sound arrogant!
- Also show that you have knowledge about the company (might need to do some background info) and explain why you like it/why you are a good fit.....for example "I feel that my innovative experience in the field of technology makes Google the next logical step in my career. The corporate culture and long-term technology goals of Google excite me. I would love the opportunity for an interview."
Mama, if you want to PM me your cover letter after you have written it (even if it is a draft or not in perfect shape) I'd be happy to help edit it.
Good Luck
