Well Water & Flouride

Thread Starter
DH and I just moved to a new house and are now on well water. I took DD (2yo) to see a new pediatrician and she wrote me a prescription for flouride and told me to give her a supplement every day since there is no flouride in our water now. She said it's only necessary until age 3 then the pediatric dentist will decide if flouride supplements are still necessary.

I saw some older posts about flouride and a lot of people being against it but really haven't had time to do any research of my own. Does anybody have any links or info they can provide about why I should or should not give her the supplement? My gut tells me not to give it to her but I need something to back that up when DH starts questioning me

TIA!

Curious too. My son (20 months) has always drunk well water, and I've never thought twice about it - no one ever mentioned supplementing things.

Lucky duck...now you don't have to have the fluoride removed. : I miss having well water. Fluoride is a neurotoxin and has been linked to bone cancer and thyroid issues. As someone who has multiple cancer issues (essential thrombocythemia, plus a lymph node that is suspicious for lymphoma that is being removed next week) and a family history of thyroid issues, we try to minimize the amount of unfiltered tap water we drink as a result.

There has also been quite a bit about fluoride causing tooth disocoloration in infants/toddlers lately:

I'm not sure how you feel about Natural News (I find them a bit alarmist, but there is also some truth underneath his alarmist writing. : ) but this just came out today too: http://www.naturalnews.com/030123_fluoride_babies.html

I also wanted to say that I grew up on well water and never had cavities as a child, and my kids had well water up until 6 months ago and they never had cavities either. We do use fluoride toothpaste for our children once they hit 2 though. I don't have a problem with topical fluoride...it's fluoride injestion that squigs me.

I have done so much research on fluoride -- and I still have no idea whether or not it is the most awful stuff ever or the substance that protects teeth from cavities. Personally, my kiddos all take fluoride supplements because we're on well water, we use fluoride toothpaste, and have the dentist paint it on topically.

This is because DD1 had 8 of her teeth capped when she was 3 years old -- she had no fluoride up until that time, was EBF'd and had almost no sugar in her diet. My younger 2 have perfect teeth -- I don't know if it's because of the fluoride, or that DD1 just got the lousy teeth, but I feel ok about it.

I wish I could give a better yea or nay, but I feel like there is such conflicting info!

Yeah, we do, too. I didn't with dd1 and she's had tons of cavities and had to have 2 teeth pulled :/ I hate the conflicting info, too, but anectodatally, my other kid's teeth are fine so far.

Watch this quick video about the history of Fluoride. It might really change your mind about ever using Fluoride again.

We use topical floride, if we had well water we would not supplement. For another antidote, my 3 siblings grew up on well water no floride and 2 have beautiful teeth and the other has atrocious teeth, full of cavities. I chalk it up to nature vs. nurture
