Jedi tunic fabric?

I'm thinking maybe just muslin? I want to make a super simple tunic for my DS to wear under his Jedi robe. I'm planning for it to be just a rectangular length of fabric with a hole cut in the center for his head, then we'll belt it.

I've never worked with it, but I'm assuming muslin frays -- any ideas for finishing the neck hole? Maybe bias tape, or will that look weird?

I've made a ton of these! I've done muslin w/bias tape (very wrinkly) serged edge flannel (pretty wrinkly) and microsuede (don't have to finish edge and it doesn't wrinkle at ALL!)

Good luck- I'm sure any will look fine, especially under a robe!

When my son was Annakin, we used that crinkly-gauzy fabric that's usually near the muslin and it looked perfect. For costumes, I don't worry about perfect so I just sort of fold the neckline over as best I can and sew it down, I'm not worried about a little pucker here or there.

Thanks for the replies!

I made the costume last night and it came out really cute. I used muslin and just zigzagged the neck hole for now -- it looks okay but not great, so I might end up adding bias tape before Halloween if I find the time. I agree that costumes don't have to be perfect (and don't usually get examined that closely anyway), so I might just leave it as-is.

I also ended up making a pair of brown flannel pants, using a pair of DS's pajama bottoms as a template. They came out pretty good for my very first pair of pants with zero construction knowledge! Except that instead of sewing the two back pieces together just from the waist to the crotch, I sewed all the way down and didn't realize my mistake for a few moments.

I swear I do that every time I make PJs!
