This has got to be easier

I am starting to cloth diaper at 9 months. It has been a comedy of errors. We started with prefolds and pins and plastic pants. Now I finally have it down how to make them (I think). Unfortunately, DD is not having it anymore. Diaper changes for her have become unbearable. She screams and arches her back and rolls away. I am trying really hard and I really don't have any options left. Not to mention I have to get sewing, I have three papers and a test due this week for school and she's teething and crabby on top of everything. I can't afford to buy another pack of disposables. And she practically choked on a little scrap of velcro that got snagged on something else this morning which made us both burst into tears. Sorry this is more of a rant than anything else. Someone please assure me this is worth it. Or any tips on how to start cd'ing a very headstrong squirmy baby with limited resources? I can't afford those cloth diapers that are as easy to use as disposables. I have added velcro to mine but I'm probably going to run out of it in a couple diapers and need to use something else.

hey from you DDC.

unfortunately, you picked one of the hardest time to start prefolds. though i would think a snappi might be quicker.
there are times i do have to put my leg over dd to keep her flat.
up until now i used only prefolds with snappi, but have started to just lay a prefold in a fitted cover as it is quicker and dd has a somewhat predictable poop schedule.
dd is growing out off her prefolds (too tight to snappi quickly, but still great in a fitted cover) i plan to buy GMD workhorse, basically prefolds with snaps. with dd1 i was able to put on a snap diapers and covers with her standing up (also do with rompers that have like 10 snaps at the bottom) just snap the diapers/covers and pull them on, maybe leaving one snap undone at the waist. much quicker and my kids seems to tolerate standing much better than being on their back.

Since you have prefolds I'd go on DiaperSwappers and pick up a couple used covers that you can trifold a prefold into (like a thirsties, bummis, flip) then just put it on her like a sposie. It's really not hard and it shouldn't cost you too much to get a few covers.

I agree with PP about getting a couple of covers. You can find them as cheap! But for now, I know you said money is tight, but I think a snappi would relly speed your diaper change. I dont have much advice for changing a 9 month old, but with DD she plays with toys while I change her, or I sing her a song.

I don't think it would matter if it were sposies; she would still squirm! my 11 month old still does. I need to give him a toy or lovey to hold still.

though I started with prefolds and covers, I am gradually switching my stash to pockets for ease of use for everybody (since he does squirm so much!)

You may be able to get a few covers or fitteds in diaperswappers FFS (free for shipping) section.

Yep. Worst time EVER to change diapering strategies, b/c ALL 9 month babies are obnoxious for diaper changes, and it could make you think it is the diaper's fault, when it is just 9 month old baby behavior.

I'd get a Snappi for $4 (easier than pins) and/or wrap-style covers when you can afford it so that you can get the diaper on more quickly. This stage will pass in a few months.

I've also diapered my babes while they were standing. I'd even diaper them backwards, meaning I'd pin (or snappi if you prefer) the diaper on from behind (so the pins ended up more in the back than the front) while they stood at the coffee table and played with toys or something.

Thanks for the reassurance. DS was so good, he never ran away but DD is alot different than he was as a baby, I forgot what its like to have a squirmy baby. I finally got one of my homemade ones to work so I am feeling more confident. I do have a snappie but she doesn't really like those either, mostly because I was using them on the prefolds and she's such a chunk I think it was a little too tight for her.

Is it bad to have the forbidden cell phone just for diaper changes?

There is a size 2 Snappi for toddlers.

Try folding it into thirds and setiing it into the cover, then close it up like a regular diaper. It's a lot easier, especially with a squirming baby!

Apricot, I give her the car keys, the cell phone, all sorts of fun forbidden stuff but she will not be fooled.

Toddler snappies?? Wish I would have known that before I bought these (second hand - no package).

The ones I am making are either lay in or pockets which I prestuff and I'm adding velcro so they are going to be much easier. Its just when I run out and have to resort to others. (and since I only have four made, that's quite often).

Also, if she prefers to be on her belly, feel free to put the diaper on backwards if that makes her happier.
