IKEA sofas?

Dh and I are thinking about buying a new sofa, and we have seen some on the IKEA website that we like.
How are they like, quality-wise? We like the Karlstad sofas, and I like that you can remove the cover and wash them.

I Don't

I don't generally find IKEA sofas to be particularly comfortable or long lasting (they might start out comfortable enough, but don't stay that way).

I know there are plenty of people who love their IKEA sofa though. Maybe I just haven't sat on the right one yet.

How long do you want this sofa to last? How much will it be used?

We had an Ektorp love seat with the kahki cover. We really liked it and used it constantly for 3 years. It was still in great shape when we sold it on Craigslist for 70% of what we paid for it!

We had to remove and wash the covers many times thanks to having small girls around and it was never a hassle and they still looked good after all those spills and washings.

We had the Ektorp in leather and it held up beautifully. Highly recommend!!

My mom got one of those leather sofas and a loveseat a few years ago. It's doing really well so far. I want to say that it was the VRETA style.

I was thinking about getting a sofa a few months ago and I did some research..I would say if you are going to get one from IKEA, go for the leather sofa. They will hold up much longer and stay comfortable. The filler they use on the cloth sofas gets lumpy over time.

I bought an Ikea Ektorp corner sofa. I've only have it about a year, so I can't tell you about the longevity of it. I imagine it isn't the sturdiest thing... however, as I told DH I'm about to have 3 kids under 3.5 so I'm fairly certain they could completely trash the most expensive, well made sofa in the history of the universe in about the same time it will take them to trash this one!

But so far, we've been very happy with it. I find it very comfortable, though it doesn't really come with throw pillows so I bought a few extras.

The best, best, BEST thing in the universe about this sofa is the seat cushions. Most sofas have the cushion and a cover, and if say, a hypothetical potty training 3yo DD pees on it you can wash the cover and all you can really do is stick the cushion out in the sun and hope to bleach it a bit. The Ektorp seat cushion is a piece of foam (maybe 4"?) covered with a down-filled slipcover, and THEN the cover. So you can take both the down-filled slipcover and the cover off and put them in the washing machine. I can't promise that's actually in the washing directions, but I will say that we've stuck the down covers in the washer and dryer (low heat) a few times now as a result of these accidents, and haven't had a problem. And the down slipcover is thick enough that no wetness made it through to the foam.

Also check out the as-is department. That's where we got ours, and I swear they always seem to have at least one at our Ikea. It was 50% off, so an even better deal.

Ikea has 3 levels of things. College Student, Starter Home, and High End. Don't be tempted to buy the cheap one, is all I'm saying. I've never been happy with any of the cheap things I bought there. I do, however, love that one sofa they make that runs about $850 - it's a corner sofa that has an entire full size bed fold out of it to create like a mega bed. I always thought it would be great for sleepovers! I'm not sure which one it is, we saw it down at the store.

Really, they do hold up, if that's what you're wondering. But pay for the mid to high grade, it's worth it!
And go to the store, sit on it, lay on it, jump on it. That's how you'll know.
