Best HB Videos? I found some bad ones.

Thought I'd watch some videos - did a Google search for "homebirth videos" - clicked one of the top links, it's to the "My Best Birth" site which I know is the people who did the BoBB movie.

Um, yeah, it's kinda exactly how I DON'T want my HB to go!

They're COUNTING telling her to push a minimum amount, for crying out loud! & there are TWO people down at her perinium with their hands all over it the entire video. A third person seems to pour more olive oil, so I understand that & the support can help reduce the risk of tearing, but I also thought lots of 'messing around' down there (like vagina "wrenching") can cause inflammation & increase the risk of tears.

Finally, they make comments about "don't let that baby go back in." (Baby is crowning & the head emerges a bit more with a push, just to slip back in again.) WTF???? I mean, WTF?? That is a totally NORMAL thing -a normal part of birthing the head for it to slip back in again! There's no mention of baby being in distress & NEEDING to be born immediately, so the whole thing really baffles me.

Basically, it seems like it should have been titled, "Typical American birth, just non-typical location." Not to "bash" someone's birth, it's just that it was upsetting & distressing for me to watch & upsets me even more that it's a top link on the site of a very pro-NCB, pro-HB group. I'm confused. Really confused.

Wow that's surprising!

I watched HB videos on youtube. Just search homebirth, waterbirth, etc.

My MW only told me I was fully dilated and could push when I felt like it (that was after being stuck with a cervical lip for a while).

Huh, that's disappointing.

I looked up Hypnobabies births recently on YouTube and found several videos by someone called "gentlebirth". The format was a bit annoying - it kept cutting to title cards saying "Transition" or "Pushing" - but the births were nice. Might not be what you're looking for, though, they were very specifically hypnobabies-centric.

This is my favorite my girls love watching it and seeing the children helping, or just being cute in the case of the little nakey one running around lol.

Some of my favourite DVDs are Birth Day, and the Birth of Sabine. They are both very gentle births.

I manage a home birth website: http://morebabiespreferhomebirth.com/
We have lots of good birth videos, stories, etc. Anyone who wants to submit something is more than welcome! Our only stipulation is that stories are written and submitted by the parents themselves.
(If anyone has any favorite youTube videos, send me a link on the form at the site, too!)

That's a nice site!

I agree that the birth you linked is rather disturbing, OP! It was making me feel uncomfortable just looking at it. The environment was probably more relaxed than at hospital births, but it was all very midwife-led, and not evidence based at all. I'd hate that many people at my female parts - and I wonder whether she chose that position herself?

There are plenty of wonderful births on youtube though, you just have to weed out the ones you don't find useful. They are all educational in one way or another . Laura Shanley has UC videos that are nice, if you are interested in that.

I posted Reese's video on Mybestbirth. It is not my birth but the midwife gave me permission. I feel the same way, that that mommy was doing what her body wanted to do and the midwives were railroading her into something else unnecessary and even damaging.

One of my favorite homebirths is this one:
http://pregnancyvideos.googlepages.com/homebirth7-27-09
Mommy pushed for FOUR HOURS but that's the pace her baby wanted to come out. No one was shouting at her to "push, push, push!" "don't let it go back in!" "hold him down!" or anything like that. It was just gentle encouragement throughout it all. Really one of the most beautiful births I've ever seen home or otherwise.

My site has a whole section devoted to homebirths http://sites.google.com/site/pregnancyvideos/homebirths.
I'm up to 91 homebirths there are many much more peaceful ones there.

I discussed this yesterday with my MW & her apprentice. They made strange faces at first (like, "WTH?") when I said what the video contained. We briefly watched some & my MW was oh-so-diplomatic, "Well, we only see a little snippet here... we don't know what else was going on... I try not to judge based on snippets..."

Haha! yeah, yeah, I get it - and she IS right - it WOULD have been great midwifery care IF that baby were truly not coping well & had some concerning decels going on.

HOWEVER, based on the snippet, I still don't get the sense that that was the case - AND I would expect that a MW who WOULD only do 'purple' pushing in the case of fetal distress would MAKE A POINT OF STATING SO - if this were ONLY due to a baby in distress, she would have said so! (yeah yeah, again, I could be wrong on that, but I really doubt it.)

But it was another platform for me to reiterate to them both, yet again, nicely of course, "Keep your hands off my vagina, BE QUIET, LEAVE ME ALONE & let me do my thing." (unless a real, true legit reason arises for you to deviate from that.)
