Phonics Pathways?

Anyone use it? What do you like/dislike about it?

I have a very young but fluent reader on my hands. He taught himself to read before he even turned 3 - it was a while before we caught on and realized that he was really reading and hadn't just memorized his books...I tried phonics with him and he hates it. I have tried Hooked on Phonics - old version from when my little brother needed reading help and the newest version. He is sucha visual learner that it was a major flop. Tried various computer games, all of which resulted in "that is baby work. I know how to read."

And he does, he reads amazingly well - has been reading chapter books onhis own before he was 5...He is asking to learn grammar now, and loving learning about verbs, nouns, etc. But he gets so frustrated with writing and with spelling. 3-4 letter words he can usually get if he bothers to take the time to do it. BUt he likes instant gratification and is VERY easily frustrated. I don't think a traditional spelling program would be a good fit for him right now. I do believe that the endless amount of reading he does on his own and with us make a HUGE difference in his vocab and future spelling ability. But I would really really like him to have a bit more than just a basic grasp of phonics - especially to make spelling less frustrating...

Phonics Pathways seems to be mainly games - is it really? Any info you can give me on the program itself and HOW you use it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

i personally wouldn't buy a reading program. i would purchase all about spelling, or something along that line. my daughter was in chapter books but spelled poorly. she started with AAS 1. she moved through it very quickly, but i felt starting in level 1 would lay a good foundation. she continued through AAS 2 & now she's using a charlotte mason approach with spelling, through dictation (simply spelling & megawords). using a spelling program is the best route to take imho. hth.

Yeah, if he is already reading, spelling might be a good route. All About Spelling is awesome because it covers all the whys and hows of phonics. This is especially helpful when you and your child learn about the different syllable types and how that affects a word. We love it. The first few lessons will go incredibly fast--you could probably cruise through the first 15 really. But, still start with book one. It lays a great foundation for everything else.

If you really want a reading program, we have also used ABeCeDarian and it is definitely not babyish. http://www.abcdrp.com/supplements.asp

I don't know much about phonics pathways.
