Suddenly back to square one?

UGH! I am getting so frustrated. We have been getting really good at noticing our puppies potty cues, and they have been getting really good at going "on command" as well. Nearly perfect with pee and the pooping was coming along too. Generally though we would have a poop to pick up once daily or once every other day.

Until yesterday. I have no idea what has happened or if it is one dog or both dogs or what. I am beginning to think it is the boy dog. I am also loosing it and need some help. Starting last night I took them outside to go potty--they both went pee, one went poop. We praised, came in, got ready for bed and right before I put them in the crate I found some poop. I thought "dang, I should have waited longer for pup #2 to finish". Then, this morning within minutes of coming inside, someone (or both?) pooped in my room. DH took them out, then they came in my room--I was still in bed with a migraine. They often will lay on my robe in the early morning (between 5 and 6) while I finish sleeping. They don't do well going back to the crate after all night in it. But, until now, they have never had an accident during that hour because dh or I had just potted them.

I was irritated because the smell made the headache worse--I kinda blamed dh thinking maybe he was in a rush. I picked it up/cleaned put dogs outside and went back to bed. Since then we have had countless pee and poop accidents all day long! I have been home and they have been out regularly. They do this within minutes of bringing them in.

I am beginning to not respond well at all. I need to know if/what might be wrong. The dogs know that I am getting upset. It is really hard to be blaise about it now--it was going so well.

I'm sorry, I know it's a pain, and I don't have any advice. I am subbing because my pup has been like this from the beginning -- peeing in the house all the time even right after coming in. We're on day 2 of tethering, and it's going perfectly, but I'd like to see the responses to your situation in case we have any set backs. I think I'm sub'ed to about 4 different house training threads, so it's a common issue. I say issue and not problem because the fact there are so many threads about it shows that it's really very normal (though incredibly frustrating) puppy behavior. I'm not sure how tethering would work for 2 dogs, but I am totally impressed with it so far.

I am subbing to this thread because we too had a set back (minor) yesterday, after my glowing post on how our puppy hadn't had an accident since the first week we had him.

We bought one of those Puppy Patches when we first got Oscar, but decided not to use it - he did poop on it once though. I still had it out, which probably wasn't very clever of me, and last night he decided to pee on it out of the blue. I guess it was irresistible! Needless to say it has gone now and I don't want him to think it is okay to pee in the house.

Well, hearing that it is normal is actually helpful. Its nice to know that I am not alone.

The puppies aren't ever left alone. If we are leaving to go somewhere, they are put in the crate. I keep them restricted to our great room area because that is where I am 90% of the time. Fortunately, this isn't a carpeted area. We rolled up the rug that is by the door so that we can clean any messes easily. The only rug left is the area rug. I haven't ever found poop there yet and I really don't think they are peeing on it. They poop near it, but not on it so far. I hope that doesn't change because I don't want to roll up all rugs.

I am really hoping that yesterday was just a "bad day". So far today has been much better. They did their morning job at 5AM (I took them out so I know that they pooped and peed). Then we did a bit of snuggle play before I noticed them drifting off to sleep again so I brought them to my room to try out our morning rest--them on my robe me back in bed. It went well. I lightly slept for about an hour or hour and a half. Then we got up for the day (checked room--no accidents) and I took them out again. They both peed and one did a poop again. Now they are playing with the kids and will get their breakfast too before we take them out again.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for a better day.

It is indeed normal and quite possible for pups to have bad days, just like humans. I hope things are going better for you now!

For those in similar situations, the best thing you can do when you see a set back is to reevaluate the situation - are there any recent changes in eating habits, schedule, potty area, etc. - and determine if there's a trigger for the set back or not. Assess the pup's health as well and when in doubt, see your vet.

If there's a trigger, address that first. If not, take a few steps back in the training process - often we get too comfortable with the pup's good behavior and accidentally give them more freedom than they are ready for - adding in a bit more restriction and working up more gradually usually does the trick.
