How to Avoid Pee-Soaked Diapers & PJ's?

Lately DS has been sleeping about 10 hours each night, often straight through - which is, of course, a wonderful thing. However, since we're not having to come in in the middle of the night to change a dipaer, he's often waking up with such a wet diaper that his diaper cover and PJ bottoms are soaked!

He doesn't seem to really guzzle down drinks all day, but sometimes will drink more in the evening than during the day. He always has a small drink of either water or milk before bedtime (by small I mean about half an inch of liquid in one of those plastic IKEA kid cups). To my mind, the amount of pee coming out overnight is more than what I see enter his body during the day.

Any ideas about how to put an end to the soakings? I don't wanna wake him up to go potty in the middle of the night, but I'm also wondering at what age kids do start doing that.

my DD1 didnt start waking up dry until she was 3, my DS not until he was 6. do you CD? cause you could just add more stuffing and use fleece pants over his cover. there really is no way to stop him from peeing all night or that much. when DD1 was 2, she had 3 prefolds in a cover. that was the only way to keep her from leaking. yeah it looked funny but she slept fine.

Yeah, about that age I just started double stuffing DS1's diapers. I suspect I'll be doing the same for ds2 here shortly.

Have you begun any sort of potty training/learning? If you have, what about getting him up and sitting him on the potty (with lights really dim or off) to have him go before you go to bed? He might still be a bit young for that tactic though. I know that is what my mom had to do with one of my siblings who was a habitual bed-wetter as an older child until they learned to rouse themselves enough to go by themselves. But again, this was with an older child, not a toddler.

My DD was like that for a while. I ended up making some wool covers to put over her pocket diapers that were stuffed with three full-sized inserts. The wool caught any of the excess and we had no more wet jammies.

With DD we used good ol plastic pants over her diapers, worked like a charm.

This question comes up all the time in the diaper forum. You just need to accept it and add more absorbency. My guy can soak a setup that holds about 30 oz. Yet his daily intake is only about 30 oz. Can't explain it, it just is.

As for night dryness, that is different for every child, but dont even look for it until they've mastered daytime dryness. Some kids dont manage night dryness until much older (i think i was 8).

Right now we're using a cotton/hemp blend fitted diaper that has an insert (of the same material) and an Imse Vimse cover (PUL on the inside, cotton outside). DS goes to bed when we do...and his bedtime routine does include going potty. But, he's certainly storing up more than comes out at that potty time.

The extra diaper stuffing is a great idea - I have a bunch of hemp inserts that I can use. Crossing my fingers...

extra stuffing and wool cover!

Yup, extra stuffing, maybe something bamboo or such, and a wool cover! We used bumgenius with DD and she would leak but we just added a babyology wool longies cover and she was golden!

When my son was doing this it was his first pee of the morning that was overflowing everything. Even though I love laying in bed those last few minutes, knowing he's awake but not up yet, I've discovered if I can get in there before he does his morning pee - and get it on the potty, no leaks.

Get one bullet proof wool longie like an aristocrat soaker, etc. for use only at night.
