When did your baby start to smile at you?

Hi all

So, when I first found out I was having a baby I promised myself I wouldn't worry about this. I promised myself again when Adric was born. I promised myself again on his six-week "birthday". He is now seven weeks, and still has not smiled at me. Guess what...I'm worried now!

He smiles in his sleep all the time, but doesn't make the best eye contact and has never cracked a smile for his mother. I know he is still very young, but (like the rest of us) I can't help worrying about the A-word. It's in the family, and he's a boy, so...one in 100 chance (well, one in 80 chance in the state we live in).

Let me know when your baby first gave you a smile! Did s/he smile at you all the time thereafter, or was it gradual? I am hoping there is a big range here. Help me keep my promise to myself!

Thanks!

Like you, mama, I also worried about this. Cecilia was around 7 weeks when she gave a tiny, brief smile that I almost missed. Then, exactly on her two month birthday, I woke up to this:

From that moment onward, she has been a very, very smiley baby. It's like some neuron connected to some other neuron and that's all she wrote.

It was closer to 9 weeks for my little guy. He smiled ALL THE TIME in his sleep - even giggled! But smiling in response to my smiling at him took a while. And just like Cecilia (above) he is now all smiles all the time

My DS has been a pretty text-book baby; he smiled at 6 weeks. My DD, OTOH, took a lot longer. She was also a HN baby... I don't know if that has anything to do with smiling... but she smiled closer to 8 weeks, and even then it was inconsistant. She gave me lots of sleep smiles, though, and DS didn't give me as many of them!

For us, smiles and eye contact were pretty close to right away- I mean within the first week there was eye contact, and I don't remember exactly smiles but pretty early on.

DS smiled once (supposedly) at my brother who was visiting when DS was 6 weeks old. But, he didn't really smile for me until 8 weeks or so and then not consistently. By 10 weeks, he was a smiley baby all the time. He's very social as an 8 month old-plays well with other children, our dog, etc, so I wouldn't worry about a late smiler. He's probably just working on other things right now.

I can never remember the exact times for all this stuff, I should really start writing it down.
But I think it was around 6 weeks. However, DS was born nearly 2 weeks overdue, so you could say in that sense he was 8 weeks.

Both of my boys smiled at me around the same age - 6 to 7 weeks old. DS2 is a much more smiley baby then DS1 was. Plus, he's got dimples so that it makes his little smiles extra cute!
