I've used the Duggar recipe. It does make gallons, but I can tell you it works! It's basically the same as most of the other recipes I've seen online. FWIW, I have a front-loading washer and we have a water softener too.

Homemade Liquid Laundry Soap from:

I made a bunch of the ones on tipnut dot com (list of 10) and they all work great!

The residue on #2 (liquid) bugs me, so I wouldn't make that one again. The rockhard consistency of #10 and the longer prep time has dropped that one from my re-do list. I wanted to love the second powder recipe, but it was such a fine powder that it was like dust and made me cough a lot every time I put a scoop into the washer regardless of how careful I was.

I haven't used all of them, yet (besides the initial trying it out once load), but my favorites so far are:
~ first powder recipe; and
~ first liquid recipe.

I want to repeat that they all work well and laundry comes out clean and fresh. It is just the little details that places the two above as "favorites".

i like a powder detergent. here is my simple recipe:

1 box borax
1 box washing soda
1 box (large) baking soda
1/2 oz -1 oz essential oil (i like lavender)

mix with whisk in 2 gal or bigger bucket. i use 1/8 c. (or 2 tbls) per load in a front loader. adjust amount for each load depending on the hardness/softness of your water and enjoy!

1 cup Borax
1 cup super Washing Soda
1 cup Sun detergent(with bleach alternative)
1 cup Sun oxygen cleaner

(I got the Sun products at Family Dollar)

Use one tablespoon per load.

Works out to something like 3 cents a load. And works great!

1 Bar soap (Fels-Naptha) (grind up in food processor or grate)

1 Cup Borax

1 Cup Washing Soda (not baking soda)

Mix, Use 1-3 tablespoons, depending on size and amount of dirty-ness. :-)

I have only used Fel-Naptha.  Works great, but trying Zote today and adding in 1 cup baking soda to the mix as well.
