I'm pretty sure I'm an epic potty teaching failure. But really, I don't know. My daughter *finally* got it when she was 4. At the time, I thought I was just really bad as a mom, I know now she has Aspergers and was very rigid and 'normal' approaches don't always work as intended. She did finally make the leap- but on her own terms.
Fast forward several years. My 27 month old has taken to taking his wet/soiled diaper off himself. He also has incredibly sensitive skin, and really needs to be out of diapers asap. When I put him in undies, he will wait to go until he is back in diapers (when we are going out somewhere, when he goes to take a nap or go to bed.) So- at some level, I suspect he is ready. However, he doesn't 'get' the potty as anything more than a really nifty stepstool/seat or whatever serves his purpose at any given moment. Sitting him on it results in Much Screaming.
Complicating this- while I can explain things, he is non-verbal. His receptive language is vastly improving by leaps and bounds, his expressive language is very delayed. A conversation isn't likely to have any impact as he doesn't really use words as tools to experience the world yet.
Help?
