Trying to figure out what to do

We co-sleep with both of our LO's. They are now 1 and 2.

We currently have two double beds pulled up together to suit this arrangement, and it was working well for a long time... except that now both little ones take up so much space on the beds now as they obviously aren't getting any smaller.

We considered getting a twin to increase bed space, but ended up deciding not to and seeing if we could make what we had work. For awhile, I started just putting my son and daughter on one bed, sideways, so we could have the other bed. It worked well until I night weaned my son recently. My daughter still nurses at night, though. So usually, my son ends up on one bed, and my daughter ends up with me. My husband and I like to sleep on the same bed (obviously) but my daughter is taking up so much space now and I don't want to put her on the same bed as my son since she still nurses at night. I avoid sleeping too close to my son because if I do he thinks it's okay to nurse. Also, if he wakes up, he now often just sleeps with my husband. So sometimes I end up on one bed with our daughter and my husband on the other with our son.

We do have a toddler bed with a hard crib mattress (too hard IMO.) I've used it a few times for my son, but rarely. One option would be to get another mattress or try to make it more comfortable and see if he could sleep there. I don't know though - it just doesn't seem like enough space. We do also have a soft sofa floor bed...

Or we could get a twin bed and add it, like we considered before. Only problem with this is we'd rather not spend the money if we don't have to. We found an inexpensive frame but the mattress would be expensive. And we don't have twin sheets or anything. So it would just mean more money which we'd rather not spend if we don't have to...

Or we could replace a double with a king, or queen... which would be more expensive....

Or we could stick with what we have and keep doing as we were doing... but my husband said it was too crowded (he's not against our sleeping arrangements at all, but he keeps getting pushed to the edge of the bed, poor guy, lol.)

Hope that wasn't too confusing.

What would you do?

Firstly I am in awe of you being able to nightwean and still cosleep!
Secondly I think I would stick with the current arrangement for now and maybe set up the toddler bed at the foot of the bed for your son. get him ot choose the bedding and make a big fuss of it. Then hopefully he will be excited about having his own space and will gradually move onto it. Then you will have more space but he is close by and doesn't need to move out. It could also be cheaper.
We only have one child and sometimes DH has slept in the spare room to make it easier for us all. But that is always a temporary move. I guess you do have to be flexible and the thing which comforts me is that things will continue to change so hopefully as your son gets older and your daughter too it will get more straight forward. I think you are right not to spend a whole lot of money unless you think you will have more children and can see that you will need more space. Then buying a king might make sense in the long run.

Good luck with making your decisions.

Thanks for the feedback, it was helpful!

I think it only works because my husband is so supportive. My son still wakes up a few times a night but often will go to him. I do end up nursing him at night sometimes, but most nights, it's nowhere near as often as it was, thankfully! I wasn't getting much sleep when I was getting up with both of them. My daughter at least lets me unlatch her so it is easier to get sleep even when she gets up a few times to nurse. My son does not like to be unlatched.

We put the toddler in the room. No go so far. I don't think it is going to work. The mattress is too uncomfortable, too. We got it from freecycle so no real loss as we didn't spend money on it... we actually ended up discussing maybe just giving it away so it could be used for its real purpose, for someone who might actually use a toddler bed. I usually just use it as a "chair" when I am sorting clothes. Both little ones are now crowded onto one bed with my husband even though the toddler bed is in there. Lol.

eta: or maybe I spoke too soon (morning now) - he did sleep in it for part of the night, then came in the big bed until 7 when he wanted to nurse, and asked to go in the toddler bed. And I was thinking if we got a nicer mattress, maybe my daughter could sleep there. She lets me put her down after nursing and actually let go of me herself last night so just maybe... this will be interesting
