Glucose test at 16 weeks?? Dr. app. tomorrow.

Hi,

I need to decide if I want to do an early glucose test tomorrow. I didn't have GD with my last pregnancy in 08 and I'm at a lower weight now....though still heavy. I don't have any symptoms though I'm really not sure what they are. I've been trying to read about it today.

Is anyone else doing an early test? What are your opinions on it? I think I'm ok with doing the "regular" one later in the pregnancy but I don't feel like this one is necessary.

How is your urine? If it is fine, I probably wouldn't do the test, unless my doctor gave me a really compelling reason. I can't think of a reason other than having sugar in the urine sample, though.

Thanks Allison. I'll ask about that tomorrow. They've never mentioned anything other than me having bacteria in my urine.

Does your doctor offer everyone an early GD screen or are you in a particularly high risk group? I have a family history of Type 2 diabetes so was asked to take the 1 hour at 15 weeks, but that's not standard.

I did an early 1 hour this time. I actually wanted it. I gained over 70 lbs the first 2 pregnancies. I had big babies and now I am 36. Plus I kept complaining about being thirsty. like so thirsty and nothing helped! I wasn't gd the first 2 times despite the weight gain and big babies. They did perfect, no issues at all with their blood sugars. I just grow 'em big- hubby and I were both almost 9 lbs ourselves. But the thirsty thing was concerning me. I would have rather known if I was having issues early so I could really keep an eye on it and make sure that I controlled everything well. Of course, it came back perfectly fine. So I don't even know if it was worth doing the test.

I say just follow your gut. I'm doing a lot more testing this time than I ever did. But for some reason feel the need to (must be my age!) Once I hit 20 wks and transfer to birthcenter I just want to know all is good.

i declined an early test this time- i took it with ds because I felt like I didnt know any better. I let them do a fasting blood draw at my last visit instead. I felt like that was less invasive. I'm very overweight, and have a family history of type II, but I eat well, and exercise often and have never had any trouble with my blood sugar. I feel like my particular OBGYN office is test happy, and I want to avoid some of that this time if I can.

I declined it yesterday. I saw a different midwife yesterday and told her that I wasn't high risk last time and had a perfect pregnancy and I didn't want to be treated like I was high risk this time. I told her that I read that GD doesn't even show up this early and she said they were actually screening for regular diabetes....kind of sneaky. I told her I just had blood work done in January and I was fine and she was happy with that.
