Astrology Houses

Can someone please explain the houses in astrology to me? I love astrology, but the houses really have me stumped. I just don't understand how to figure them out. I know the first house is your ascendant, for instance. My ascendent is Libra, so what does that mean? My first house is in Venus? Wisdom would be highly appreciated!
