Preventing GBS

Hiya! My GBS test is in 2 weeks (yeah, totally snuck up on me). I don't want to do anything too drastic but I'd like to reduce the odds of having a GBS infection. What can I do?

You can eat rich probiotic foods like kefir, raw yogurt, fermented veggies and take a high quality probiotic. 2 weeks is a short time though to up your good bacteria count to over take the bad ya know. Are you having a home birth?

No but I still want to avoid the antibiotics anyway. I'm already on one kind for a kidney infection I had at 23 weeks. I don't really know where to get raw yogurt though... I'm not even sure if its legal to sell around here (I know raw milk and raw cheese are illegal).

I would get on a probiotic asap then! Texas has tons of resources for raw dairy. Go to www.realmilk.com

I would do Hibiclens. This page lists the protocol for use before your GBS test and for during labor: http://www.drmomma.org/2009/09/chlor...tocol-for.html

You don't need yogurt made from raw milk, just don't cook the yogurt - that would kill the yogurt bacteria. You want yogurt with live cultures. Most yogurts you buy in the regular grocery store are fine - read the side of the carton for "live" or "active cultures" if you're not sure.

My midwife for my second pregnancy had me do garlic and acidophilus suppositories for about a week before the swab. You can get them at health food/supplement stores, they come with an applicator etc so nothing like stringing your own clove of garlic or anything like that It sounds icky but wasn't that bad, really - I put one in before bed each night, washed away in the shower in teh morning. I was positive with my first child (did nothing to prep for the test) but tested negative with the second (no saying whether the suppositories actually worked, but hey, I got my negative!! I will probably do them again this time, I think)
