Cosleeping and SIDS...

Does a crib, not sidecarred, but flush up against a bed where the parent and the baby can literally see, hear and touch eachother, have the same affect of reducing the risk of SIDS as actually sleeping in the same bed together?

My understanding is that room sharing is also beneficial in the early days, as far as helping the infant function at night.

How does co-sleeping or even room sharing help lower the risk of SIDS? sorry I'm a new mama and don't know much about SIDS but do worry about it.
