sleep routine suddenly just not working

usually we'd shower, pj's, brush teeth, and then either I or DH would wrap him on our backs and do dishes; this would relax him and calm him down a lot - either he'd fall asleep then, or if not I'd nurse him right after and then he'd fall asleep.

for the past few weeks though, this has had barely a 50% chance of working. He gets really tired, will put his head down while being wrapped, but then will 'wake up' kind of and arch and cry. So then Ill nurse him, he'll get somewhat sleepy but then 'wake up' at the end, crawl away (we cosleep) put his head down a lot, but keep himself awake, grab a book, etc.

Occasionally he'll just toss and turn and then finally fall asleep himself, but this has only happened twice.

I'm just at a loss as to what to try. We don't have a crib, we won't just let him cry, but I'm just not sure what he 'needs' to get to sleep. I'm mostly just confused as to what is going on!

anyone BTDT? He's 16 mos.

Yep, BTDT. DD#1 has gone through a lot of different stages. A sleep routine will work beautifully for her for months, where she snuggles in & goes right to sleep, and then suddenly, literally one day, she is tossing & turning & wanting to play/talk/resist/whatever. I chalk it up to development spurts, we work our way through it and hope that peaceful sleep comes back soon. No great advice - just keep trying things until you find something that works!

Our DD is a very active kiddo - there have been times when we've had to gently but firmly keep a hand on her to remind her to stay in her bed. We've gone through spurts where we put her to bed, she gets up & romps in her room for a while (door closed) and then starts to cry, then I come back up, rock with her, and put her back to bed & she goes right to sleep. She's fallen asleep in front of her door, she's fallen asleep on the vent that looks downstairs...

Figure out something that will get you through the spurt, and then hopefully he'll adjust back to something more peaceful & faster! (Yes, there have been stretches of a few months where it takes 1-2 hours for DD to go to sleep.)
