Psychiatrist wants to Psych Hold a 6yr old. - Page 2

I don't have time to read the other posts but....

Except in the most extreme of situations, in-patient psych is no place for a 6 year old, assuming mom can keep him safe at home at all times. If they are able to consistently and constantly monitor him, there is no WAY I would allow him to go in-patient. I'm a child welfare social worker and especially an adult facility is going to be a totally inappropriate place for him. Perhaps a facility geared towards children, but you would have mainly adolescents there which is also inappropriate. The chances of CPS saying he needs to go in-patient are very low really, if mom can show that she can a) keep him and others safe with constant attention and b) address his mental health needs in an out patient setting.

I'd be headed straight to another psychiatrist. Surely this family is going to need a LOT of help and a lot of services in place to help this little boy but I do not think in-patient psych is the way to go.... I'd avoid it at all costs if it was my kid.

It might help to talk with someone in your state about this. I would encourage you to call your local chapter of the National Federation of Families for Children's Mental Health. They have parents who've been there done that and will know your local area and provide help making decisions. Here's the link: http://www.ffcmh.org/who-we-are/chap...organizations/
