re-establishing nursing with 15-mo-old after break and with multiple problems

I was out of town for 5 days and left pumped milk for my 15-month-old. I pumped while I was gone to keep up my supply. When I was out of town two months ago we did the same thing and it took a few days of nursing on demand and low-supply for my little guy to get nursing back on track, but everything went pretty smoothly.

The first couple days were tough with feeling engorged, not being able to pump as soon as I needed to... then my nipples started to get sore and bleeding/oozing. I pump every day when I am home, but not without nursing too. Naturally, with him not nursing and the pain with pumping, I started pumping less and my supply started to drop off.

Meanwhile, back home, my son was teething and had a cold, and then developed thrush! He was having a really hard time sleeping both at night and during the day. My husband is a stay-at-home parent, so he is well-equipped to give him expressed milk and put him to sleep, etc. BUt the little guy was pretty miserable most of the time and they got very little sleep.

So now I am home... last time I was out of town I just let my little guy nurse on demand as much as he wanted when I got home to re-establish my milk supply. This time it is really painful so I am having trouble letting him nurse so much, and definitely can't let him stay latched on for long periods of time, which is what he wants to do. His thrush seems to be relatively mild and clearing up on its own, but I am also worried I will get it and we will pass it back and forth, especially because of the sores on my nipples.

Any thoughts?? Any one of these issues on their own I feel like I could handle, but dealing with them all together is making me feel like I need some advice, especially if you've been-there-done-that!

Sounds to me like you already have thrush. Painful nipples, baby with thrush. I would get treated asap (whatever method you prefer) so you can get the pain under control and get back to nursing comfortably.

Yep, I agree it sounds like you already have thrush. Perhaps a little tylenol or Ibuprophen to help with the pain.

Thanks guys. I guess it didn't even occur to me because the symptoms came up for both of us when we'd been apart for a few days. We are already both feeling better and hopefully we can get this cleared up and I can keep nursing enough to keep up my milk supply until we get to the other side of this thing!
