Peanut Butter and Choking hazard

Because of allergies in the family I waited to give DS1 peanut butter until he was nearly 3 (he has an anaphylactic allergy to egg). DS2 has had other ideas about food and has had peanut butter several times off his brother's plate. Since he's obviously not allergic, is it ok to feed to him or should I wait because of it being a choking hazard? He now seeks it out because he really likes it, but so far I've always taken it away.

Unless he's eating spoonsfull or is taking huge bites of a soft bread peanut butter only sandwich, I don't think it's going to be that much of a choking risk--and it's the bread I'd worry about more than the nut butter.

How about making ants on a log? That way you can sort of control the amount of peanut butter per bite and there'll be nice wet celery to help break up the butter.

Otherwise, just make sure he's got water available.

If you spread the peanut butter out thinly on a plate, rather than just plop a scoop into a bowl, he'll be less likely to get much on his fingers to choke on. (Assuming he's using his fingers and not a spoon). Even a pretzel stick would work.

I don't think I would personally do ants on a log with a one year old....celery itself is tough for babies to chew, and adding raisins and pb....hmmm....my worried self would see THREE choking hazards!!!

good point, dd gets plain celery, pb on a spoon (licks it off little by little), and raisins a few at a time, not all together. I was thinking more about how it doesn't stick to my mouth when I do pb with celery and how dd is okay with all the components.

OP, how about you just hold a spoon for your ds so he can lick it and you can keep an eye on how much is going in and how much is already in his mouth?

We usually give DS a spoon that's been dipped in PB. Then it's kind of thinly coated, so he doesn't get the big globs. We replenish as necessary. Otherwise, he gets it thinly spread on a piece of whole wheat bread or apple slices (he's also good about dipping apple slices & not scooping up too much).

Well, I'm also coming at it from the perspective of a parent whose 19 month old STILL doesn't have a single molar.

So we haven't introduced celery yet. And not even apple slices!

On a warm toast the PB will melt and be much less of a chocking hazard

Aw DS got his molars late too (I think right around 18-19mos?) but he did great with apple slices from when he first started solids And we sometimes do thin (1/4") slices of celery which he could mash up with his gums. He spit a lot out (still does) but he loved trying to eat them

I like the warm toast idea! He'll be very glad to know he can freely have it without the need to sneak it off someone else's plate! Thanks for the tips.

While DS does have all 4 molars, he still spits out most raw veggies and fruits, so I don't think he'd do well with celery.

DD eats pancakes spread with peanut butter every morning for breakfast. She has been eating this for months and months, is 14 months old, and just got her first two teeth in the last few weeks. We cut the pancakes into bite sized pieces for her. She also sucks on apple slices with peanut butter (my favorite snack) and eats toast with peanut butter if I have been lazy with my pancake making and there aren't any in the freezer for her.

We do sun butter on warm toast here at 12 months. I cut it up into little cubes - I try to keep it "cheerio" sized, and only dole out a few at a time. It works really well.
