Cod Livers

I just found canned cod livers (packed in their own oil) at a grocery store today. So good! I put them on buttered toast. Tastes a little like tuna.

I've never seen them, but have heard that they're good (and great for you!). Can you tell me what the brand name is so I can see if I can order some.
Thx!

I went back today... and saw that there were 12 brands! Some of the labels were in Russian, so I wouldn't be able to write the names here (it's a Russian grocery store). I bought "Great King" yesterday, which is imported through NY, and smoked cod livers by the brand "Officer" today, and apparently that's a brand from Denmark. Both say product of Iceland.

Do you have any international grocery stores around? Anything eastern European or northern European would have it.

I paid 1.79 and 1.99 respectively for 4 oz tins.

Thank you, Aven, I will check those out!

I think it's the same thing that I tried a while ago .... one time I had temporary vision problems after eating a whole 4 oz by myself.

I love the taste and texture and wouldn't mind having some much more frequently but am a bit worried now about a possible unwanted side effect.... was it an overdose of Vit D ? was it totally un-related ?

Has anyone else had a similar experience ?

We split most of a 4 oz can amongst our family of five. I finished up most of the last of it at lunch today, and gave some of the excess oil to our cats. No vision troubles - that's weird. Maybe it's an 'in moderation' thing, but I'd probably avoid that brand if you have other options.

It wouldn't be an overdose of vitamin D, maybe a vitamin A issue. Its pretty darn near impossible to overdose on vitamin D and cod liver doesn't have a whole lot in it. Hm maybe even an excess of B-vitamins.
Or it was totally unrelated.
I've never even heard of canned cod livers before this thread, I always wondered what they did with the leftover livers

yes, of course I meant vit A, not D , was very tired when I wrote the post
= must try to be reasonnable then and eat it over 2 days (none of my family will try my "weird" foods ...)

I've never heard of canned cod livers, either! How was the texture? That's my biggest liver hang up.

for texture, it looks crumbly when you start spreading it but actually it's very soft and spreads quite well & it melts in the mouth, more than a meat paté
