Fall with the Duggars - Page 2

Courting *is* the "getting to know you".  The way the Duggars do it is very different from the way most people date.  But it does not involve marrying strangers. :)

I think Josh's personality rubs a lot of people the wrong way.  He is, from all I've seen, a really nice guy, a great husband, and a loving, involved daddy.  I think it's just the way he phrases things.  But he's young, there's still hope.  I know I was pretty annoying in my early 20's too.  So self-assured and convinced that I was right about *everything*. lol.gif

The part that's hard for me to wrap around (and correct me if I'm not understanding it right!) is courting has the assumption that they will marry. Is that correct? So if you meet someone and think.. that's a real interesting person, I think we hit it off well and they may be "the one" for me.. lets court! So what if after courting for several months you realize.. maybe it just won't work out. How does it work if that happens?

A focused conversation on courting would probably best be placed in Religious Studies.

From how it was described on the show and how it worked with the Duggars specifically then they would end the courtship no harm no foul.

yea for grandbaby #2 on the way!

I wonder if it isn't a little hard for Michelle to think about how her body might have moved her out of the baby making stage to the grandmother stage.  (not that she couldn't have a few more babies)

Courtship-Ah, ok, I understand that better now, don't want to derail the thread but having watched the show I was confused as to how they courted.

I wish I could see the current episodes.

Okay, so didn't they say just a couple episodes ago that they didn't eat pork? Because they just ordered a ginormous pepperoni pizza....

Yep no bacon because of port. I didnt even catch that about the pepparoni.

I think some people might not realize that pepperoni = pork.

lol, I don't even associate pepperoni with a particular animal.  Not like I do bacon or beef or something.  One of my wierd little quirks.

I don't know if they know.  But if they eat pepperoni once in a while, to me it falls right in with their norm.  They have preferences and habits based on their understanding of the Bible but don't stick so ridigly to them based on their understanding of grace and freedom.

I think they eat turkey bacon because they believe it is healthier. I have seen them eat pizza while out before. I haven't seen them mention biblical reasons.

Yeah, in one of the blurbs it said "For religious reasons, the Duggars don't eat pork products."

That might be so.  I know they have mentioned in their show the period of abstinence after a birth, based on old testament cleanlieness laws.

The blurbs have an unfortunate error rate though.

Even so, I think the Duggar's get percieved at first glance as super-rigid (they're religious and wear funny clothes, they must be legalistic!!!).  Over the years that I've watched the show, my perception of them is the opposite.  They are quite flexible.  Not doing things because they think they'll go to hell if they don't.  Just following convictions and preferences, and having room for differences and the need to change.  For instance, the abstinence thing isn't because they think God will smite them if they don't abstain.  They do it because they believe that command was made for the health and benefit of his people, and if it was healthy/good for them, there's not reason it wouldn't be healthy/good for the Duggars.

We do courting only in our family at this point. I am sure that will have to change some day as the kids plan to go off to college. But it is not a religious thing for us. It is just an issue of logic and morals.

If you start to court someone and then decide that person is not for you, then the marriage does not happen. Courtship, in a nutshell, is just no 1 on 1 dating prior to marriage. That is the short version. But no one is forced in to marriage with someone they barely know or otherwise.
