Question about cleaning Cloth Diapers

Thread Starter
We are using the gDiapers, and when the girls are at home, we use the cloth inserts. I'm still trying to get the hang of cleaning them, and it is tedious!!

Here is my method right now. Can you tell me if I'm able to cut out any of the steps, or if there's another way of doing it??

Scrape poop into toilet with plastic stick
Rinse cloth insert with water in sink
Wash cloth insert with baby soap in sink
Rinse snap-in liner in sink
Hang liner and insert to dry
Wait until there are enough of them to launder

It takes forever to scrape, rinse, and hand-wash the inserts and liners that many times, I opt to use the disposable diapers because it's such a hassle to deal with the reusables.

Any advice??

1st question: Are any children exclusively breastfed? If they're not getting solids, you don't have to scrape the poo off.

Personally, I don't see the point in any of these steps

"
Just dump off the poo into the potty, (sometimes I swish it in the bowl if there's a lot stuck on), and throw the diaper and cover into a pail. You'll need to launder them every 2-3 days though, or you could have trouble with smell and staining. Also, just add and extra wash cycle or an extra rinse cycle to your normal wash load to take care of any waste still in the diapers. Does this make sense?

Yes, that does sound tedious. I throw diapers into a pail in the garage, then wash when the pail is full.

As they eat more solids, I sometimes shake poop into the toilet.

They are both formula fed only. Sadly, my milk hardly came in at all and I dried up completely a few weeks after delivery.

So I don't need to rinse/wash the wet poop off the diaper before laundering it? Isn't that a lot of poop to be putting into my washing machine?

Question about cleaning Cloth Diapers

Hi there!
Our baby girl is adopted, so is also formula fed... here's what I do...and it is also fairly simple.

1. You need the right detergent, that's most important! I use Rockin' Green in Lavender Mint (essential oils only) so it's really just to have a nice scent in the laundry space. Yes, it is a bit more expensive, but 100% worth it.

Pre-wash tips:
1. Flush poo down. we have a diaper sprayer attached to the side of our toilet. $45 totally worth it. But do get the poo out.
2.Store diapers in Wet bag or pail.
3. Wash every other day is best.

Wash steps:
1. Do a cold rinse first. If you've got 'funk', meaning after your diapers are washed and dried they still smell funky and 'wrong'... you need to do a soak. Put in washer with detergent overnight or a few hours if that's all you have. If you use the Rockin' Green Detergent, they have directions for this!
2. Then wash in hot with detergent. If you have hard water use more detergent.
3. Do an extra rinse. if you see any detergent bubbles in washer after second rinse. Rinse again. Detergent build-up is the major cause of stinky diapers.
4. Dry diapers. THE BEST WAY to get stains out is the SUN. I put mine out even in the cold if they get stains.

Short version:

Cold Rinse~Wash Hot~Extra Rinse~Dry/Sun

I tried 3-5 different detergents before finally just buying a more expensive one... Try Rockin' green. : - )

good luck

I hold the diaper over the toiled and give it a good shake to get the solids off. No rinsing necessary. Then I wash in hot water with a very small amount of Liquid Tide. I set my washer to do an extra rinse cycle, and I set it to a bit of a larger load (If I have a small load of diapers I set it to medium load)....because more water gets them cleaner.

My diapers don't stink, and I don't worry about stains until I'm putting them away for the next child or getting ready to sell them....then I sun the stains out.
