We went out to eat at Chilies last night (no high nutrution points here ) I ordered on of my favorite comfort meals a mushroom swiss fries and a coke (like I said above... )
I gave the baby from my plate
1 fry
a bit of the hamburger meat crumbled
2 mushrooms
1/2 my tomato

She LOVES tomato and mushrooms but we had at comments from 2 diffrent strangers telling we how it wasn'ta good idea to feed such a young baby mushrooms.. *no one blinked at the fry...* it was all horror over mushrooms..

What is wrong with her eatting mushrooms?

She is just shy of 8 months now...

Because those people are nosy and weird?

the *only* thing I can think of is that they are kinda slippery and thus could be a *slight* choking hazard... but other than that, idk...

DD loves portabello mushrooms. Ignore those people.

Silly. I suppose you might not want to pick mushrooms out of your yard and feed them to a baby unless you know your wild mushrooms really really well, but off a menu at Chili's? Go for it.

The mushrooms sound like one of the best things she had in that meal. IDK

This

We got a lot of weird stares and comments when we did BLW "Are you sure he can have that?" "Don't you have X food for him?"

mushrooms are fine. I can't think why not. It's just not typical 'kid food'. Whatever. DD loves spankopita and people are wierded out by that, but it's delicious so why wouldn't she? And so are mushrooms - DD has always lvoed them.

maybe because it didn't come from a jar?!?

i got the same thing once at a dinner where i gave my then 7 or 8 month old pesto pasta. it was perfect...corkscrews...so easy to grab!

so this lady said basically the same thing..."you're feeding her pesto?"
my response was something like, "yeah, pasta, garlic, basil, and olive oil? it's such a good fat. which didn't erase the look from her face.

i could see if she was freaked out about pinenuts (we're not) but i don't think that had anything to do with it.

p.s. why no "awesome blossom?!!???"

I agree with tzs. Today i gave 6 mth old some homemade hummus - chickpeas, tahini, EVOO, lemon and lots og garlic. It's actually the thing he has reacted the best to (so far hates sweet potato, broccoli, banana). Maybe it's the texture though.

DD didn't "officially" start solids until she was almost 1, but there was a restaurant in our town owned by a Mexican family and they would bring her a lime wedge to suck on while we ate starting when she was big enough to sit up. People seemed horrified by the sight!

Then when she did start solids, she ate a lot of vegetables and to this day loves food that people don't think of as "kid food" in our culture, a lot of the comments we got were so ridiculous. People couldn't believe I would let her have asparagus but not those weird little puff snacks that you're "supposed" to give toddlers

ive never heard of "no mushrooms"

i could see the tomato even, because i know of a lot of babies that get rashes from the acidity... but the mushroom? thats so weird.

DS's favorite thing to snack on before he *really* started eating? Steamed broccoli! I remember glancing over at a table and catching them gesturing to him and whispering to each other.

He STILL prefers fruits and veggies. I always order a side of steamed veggies for him when we're out...never "kid's meals"

In my experience, babies and toddler don't really digest them. I've seen more pieces than I care to count. But they generally like them. I can't imagine why it is an issue and I doubt people were saying it because of choking. Probably because it was actual food and not rice mush.

My DD2 loved mushrooms--she'd eat a whole raw one, just sit and munch on it

DS LOVES mushrooms. I've started buying them a bit more often because of the great reception they got! I was nervous when I opened this up that he wasn't supposed to have them. He eats anything we eat (except honey, peanuts, etc). BLW sometimes freaks people out.

I think the french fry is seen as an okay baby food because it's soft. I'm thinking people might have seen an issue with the mushroom because it looks like it could be a choking hazard or because it's a fungus..? But one isn't worse than the other. Who knows

I sometimes give DS french fries.. Not that I'm proud of it!

Because they're dirty? That's all I can think of.

I'm really leaning towards this.. We had another incident today that jsut made me laugh.. I had M in the set of a shopping cart at the grccery store she was munching (gumming) a slice of canalope we got in one of those free sample set ups...
LAtter I was getting some meats from the deli/bakery and the lady behind the counter sees her and goes.. Ohh do you need something appropiate for her to eat we have cookies.
